Mr Silvano Fernandes
Mr Fernandes in '69, his last year at the school
It takes a great teacher to make a lasting impression and our maths teacher, Silvano Fernandes, certainly left an impact on me. I saw Mr Fernandes as proficient teacher with a great wit and dry sense of humour.
He always had a twinkle in his eye when he questioned the class to a maths sum. Was he looking at who would be the first to come up with the right answers? He made us fall in love with numbers and angles. He brought out the best in us, a teacher who accentuated respect and the admiration of his students.
So, on my recent visit to Goa, I decided to visit him in Sazora, South Goa, on March 5, 2023 with my sister and husband, both retired teachers. During our visit we learnt from his son, Bliston, that his dad had taken seriously ill earlier in January with a serious chest infection. His oxygen levels were 54 and he spent a month in intensive care as related by his son who was in near tears in his eyes having nearly lost his beloved dad.
I was fortunate to be there on that Sunday afternoon as Mr Fernandese walked for the first time since his recovery from his bed to the sitting room of his majestic house adorned with chandeliers and 'Ming' vases. Our time was joyous and uplifting with fond memories of our school in Nairobi in the sixties. His son Bliston and wife, Angela, listened in wonder and loved our stories and Silvano fondly remembering names of his colleagues and students. Everyone in the room, including my family were teachers, except myself! Teachers are the backbone of our democracy – fostering curiosity and creativity, building skillful individuals, and strengthening informed citizens. A great teacher in every classroom is one of the most important resources we can provide students.
Your strength inspire me Silvano.
Praying for your good health. May the Lords blessing be kind to you.
Yours with much love

Addendum
Thank you. morning everyone.
On behalf of our family, I want to express our deepest gratitude to all of you for joining us today. Your presence here, whether you’ve traveled from near or far, or have sent your thoughts and prayers, means the world to us. It reflects the many lives touched by our beloved Antonio Silvano de assumpcao Fernandes, and we are truly honored to share this moment with you.
To the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who looked after him, especially during his later years, we owe you immense thanks. Your dedication, compassion, and professionalism provided him with the care he needed, and us with the comfort of knowing he was in good hands. You treated him with dignity and kindness, and for that, we will always be grateful.
To his friends, who shared in his joys and stood by him through life’s journey, thank you. Your companionship, whether through shared interests or simple moments of connection, enriched his life. The memories you’ve shared with us today remind us of the happiness he found in your friendship, and we’re so thankful for the role you played in his story.
To our relatives, both near and far, your unwavering support has been a source of strength for us. You’ve been there through the highs and lows, sharing in the milestones and offering comfort during difficult times. Your love and presence have reminded us of the deep bonds of family, and we’re so grateful for you.
A special thank you goes to our neighbors in Sarzora and beyond, the villagers he so often helped in his own quiet way. Silvano was a man of intellect, and he shared that gift generously—whether it was helping with a tricky problem, offering guidance on education, or simply lending his sharp mind to unravel a challenge. He believed in the power of knowledge to uplift, and we know many of you benefited from his wisdom. Your appreciation for his contributions, and your presence here today, mean so much to us.
To the priests who have guided us through this service, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Your words of comfort and the sacred space you’ve created have helped us find peace in this time of loss. And to the choir, whose beautiful voices have lifted our spirits, thank you. Your music has been a source of solace, echoing the hymns Silvano loved so dearly, and we’re deeply grateful for the way you’ve honored him today.
And to everyone else—his colleagues, students, and all those whose lives he touched, even in passing—thank you. Whether you knew him as a teacher, a mentor, or a kind soul, your presence here today reflects the impact he had, and we’re deeply appreciative of the ways you’ve honored his memory.
As we bid farewell to Silvano, we take comfort in the love and community gathered here. Your support has lifted us during this time of loss, and we will carry your kindness with us as we move forward.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you—for being here, for your care, and for helping us celebrate a life so well-lived. May we all continue to honor his legacy in the days ahead.
Thank you.
