Soil Judging is an intercollegiate competition and hands-on learning experience where students learn from experienced soil scientists about the classification and identification of soil features to determine their suitability for human use. Soil judging develops and tests a student’s ability to apply knowledge and skills to real-world natural systems.
UPJ's Soil Judging team is led and coached by Dr. Mitzy Schaney, Associate Professor and Director of Environmental Sustainability. This year's team competed in September in the Northeast Region and placed 2nd in Group Judging and 4th overall. The team qualified for the national competition to be held in Colorado in April.
Dr. Ray Wrabley, Vice President for Academic Affairs said, "Dr. Schaney's expertise and leadership have provided our students with opportunities to hone their skills in the soil pits and to match their skills and knowledge against top notch teams in the country. Congratulations to Dr. Schaney and her student team!" Dr. Jem Spectar, President, remarked, "we are impressed and thrilled by the accomplishments of both Pitt Johnstown's Soil Judging Team and their amazing teacher and mentor, Dr. Mitzy Schaney."
Congratulations to Ely, Sofia, Danny, Pierce, Owen, Alex, Rachel, and Chad! We placed 2nd in Group Judging, and 4th overall. The team will be headed to the National Contest in Colorado in April. Our Soil Judging Team had a fantastic time in southern Maryland last week. We learned so much, specifically about loess and fragipans. This is a fantastic performance for a tiny department in a tiny school! Our team doesn't have a long history with endowments, sponsors, donations, or support from the University, so we'll take any and all fundraising ideas.
