UPJ is teaming with Horizon Aerobotics, a Houston-based firm that operates an AI drone-based security and safety inspection service for operators of critical infrastructure, especially railroads. UPJ will acquire two HX1 Drone Systems equipped with LIDAR payloads for use in Professor Skip Glenn's Advanced Drone Technology course. These systems will provide students with hands-on experience using professional-grade, NDAA-compliant autonomous drone technology for infrastructure inspection and data capture applications. The acquisition of the drones and the Unmanned Safety Institute (USI) curriculum taught in Professor Glenn’s classes is supported by funding from FutureReady partners, Pittsburgh gateways Corporation, Aerium, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies, and Bill Polacek. Students in Professor Glenn’s class are prepared to earn the FAA’s Part 107 license to operate commercial drones.
