Let Selah Be There.

Greetings in the name of our resurrected and life-giving Lord!

It is the night of April 25th when I am working for the newsletter, and its chilly outside. Buds are sprouting from the branches of the trees, and the forsythia trees I bought and planted last year are blooming in front of my house. It looks like spring is slowing down. In Korea, a sudden short spell of cold weather is called “kkoch saem chuwi.” I hope this is the last cold snap, and I sincerely pray to God that all of you will not get sick from colds or Covid-19 and be healthy.

From the 18th to the 24th, I enjoyed a sweet vacation for a week and returned to my daily life. As you can see, I am trying to finish my sermon in 15 minutes or so. It is by no means easy for me to convey the content of the Bible text and the message from it in a brief time of 15 minutes. Even in speaking or writing in Korean, my native language, other than English, I have a poor talent. This is by no means an expression of my humility, so I have to struggle with more energy and time to complete one sermon. Anyway, the week off was sweet, and it was an opportunity to recharge for my family, including my dog, Eden. thanks!

I would like to share my stories with you while on vacation. I got my garden from Community Gardens in Parkersburg, and I was working. Compared to last year, my garden is three times bigger this year, and it is 70’ x 30’, and I am digging with a shovel to exercise my muscles. One day while on vacation, my wife Joy and I went to Iowa City, IA to meet a Korean-American pastor serving Clinton's First UMC to spend time and shop in a Korean market. Last Sunday (24th) we visited the Korean United Methodist Church in Ames for our Sunday worship service. This was my first visit in 9 years since I left the church in 2013 to go to Nigeria. We sang hymns in Korean, listened to sermons, and, of course, ate Korean food after the service. The church members we had been with from 2007 to 2013 were willing to spend time with us even after lunch. Like a long-time friend, our gathering itself was really delightful and enjoyable. My wife Joy enjoyed the women while I went for walks with my dog Eden and the men. We all joined together at Starbucks, and the story blossomed without realizing the passage of time. We regretted our parting, so we returned home promising to meet again.

Last Saturday (23rd) I went to Norwalk, IA as an Officiant to lead a wedding ceremonial service. Located in the middle of the beautiful scenery, the winery was the perfect place for the wedding couple and their families and friends for wedding ceremonies, meals, and dances. The food for cocktail hour and dinner were luxurious and polite, the groom was handsome, and the bride was beautiful and elegant. It was so wonderful that it was impossible for me to describe my emotions or the details of the wedding ceremony. However, I would like to share with you my wedding sermons prepared for the wedding couple a little bit shorter and trimmed.

It is a Hebrew word, Selah. Selah (ˈsiːlə(h) is a word used 74 times in the Hebrew Bible. It is used seventy-one times in the Book of Psalms. Its etymology and precise meaning are unknown, though various interpretations are given. It was an instruction to the musicians and Temple Singers of the psalms. It is probably either a liturgical-musical mark or an instruction on the reading of the text, with the meaning of "stop and listen." It was an instruction to slow down, pause, pay attention, reflect, and allow silence.

We can apply this to our marriages, families, and relationships. Here are some paragraphs of a message I gave them at their wedding:

You were born together today, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days. You shall be together even in the silent memory of God. Let Selah be there. “Let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of the heavens dance between you.”

Let Selah be there. On those days when life is difficult and bumpy; when you feel lost or confused; when feelings are hurt; when you are busy and missing each other; when your heart is breaking with sadness and grief. On those days when life takes you by surprise; when you get what you never expected or asked for; when you cannot foresee or know what is ahead; when, for better or worse, the impossible happens.

Let Selah be there in your life.

Many Blessings!

BIBLE SCHOOL

Bible School

We wish to thank everyone for their help and support in making Bible School a great success this year. We had 36 smiling faces who enjoyed messages, crafts, games, and singing. Each child made a WE ARE THE CHURCH quilt block and enjoyed a cookie that they made cut in the shape of their own hand, along with many sprinkles and lots of frosting. Pastor and Joy brought us a wonderful message about church and school in Nigeria and Korea, along with some beautiful music and great costumes. Special thanks to our Bible School helpers: Jean Eich, Denise LeBahn, Darla Payne, Donna Payne, Steve Koop, Pastor Chan and Joy, Dawn Cornelius, Judy Thompson, Madi Metz, Olivia Child, Aida Tott, Gentry Swarts, Grace Wood, Kale Petersen, and Cam Tott.

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Sunday School will again reopen on Sunday, September 12. We are once again looking for people to teach Sunday School much like we did last year. You pick your Sunday, bring your own ideas or we will provide materials for you. We really loved all the things many of you shared with the children last year, and we hope to repeat that again. If you would like to teach anytime in September through December, please let Denise LeBahn or Sandy Becker know. We will schedule for the winter later this fall. Thank you!

RECIPES NEEDED

We are planning a HOMETOWN COOKBOOK as a fundraiser for the Splash Pad. Our goal is to have it available for purchase at Christmas. However, we need all those great family recipes! If you would like to submit a recipe or recipes, there are forms available at church or you may contact Sandy Becker by phone or email with your recipes (319-269-4138 or sandralbecker81@gmail.com).

UPDATE: Sandy received 110 pies! She included the following thank-you to the New Hartford Community. Thanks, to you, also, Sandy!

Dear Community Volunteers,

There are no words that can say thank you enough for the wonderful event our community put on yesterday. I wanted to start thanking everyone, but then realized there was no way to thank so many people who made this happen, many we don't even

know about. Instead I decided to make a list of thoughts about... You KNOW you are from the NEW HARTFORD COMMUNITY when you...

...have people ask, "Do you still need pies??"

...when you ask for a 100 pies and end up with 110 plus! ...you see the garden committee out ALL week preparing our beautiful city gardens

...when people who no longer live in NH, drive back just to volunteer!

...you have 20 bags of ice to unload and carry a block, and suddenly there is a line of people who just show up and start carrying ice

...your mayor, city council members, and maintenance crew are all emptying garbage and keeping a constant eye on the community

...your Lion's Club shows up in full force to fry burgers on a 100 degree day ...you ask for tractors for the riders to see and twelve amazing tractors show up

clean and sparkling and ready to be shared ...your local volunteer emergency crew keep constant vigil, helping riders and

assisting in whatever way is needed ...your city clerk lines up Maddie Poppe to perform in our little town

...local friends from the lowa Corn Growers show up to feed free sweet corn ...local farmers roll into town with tractors and cables for bikes to park between

...a family volunteers to paint the big wooden bike only days before RAGBRAI ..ladies from the New Hartford United Methodist Church and all over our community

are diligently baking pies, brownies, cookies ...numerous people take vacation days, volunteer their time just to make this event

happen

....you hear comments from riders, "This was a great stop!" "Free Sweet Corn!" "These pies are homemade? Wow! This is great!" "We stopped here last time it was here, and it was great again!" "Everyone just goes with the flow here."

Yes! It is an honor to be part of this community. Thank you to everyone who helped PUT US ON THE MAP!

Sandy Becker
