What is NetPlace?

The aim of the Networks, Phd Life And ComplExity Seminars, or simply NetPLACE Seminars, is to provide a friendly and cosy place for graduate and postgraduate students from all over the world to interact, to present new/interesting developments from their areas of interest in the complex systems and networks field, as well as their difficulties during the PhD study

Thus, differently from usual seminars, our speakers are also encouraged to talk about certain difficulties encountered doing their research, so as to help and prepare everyone in the audience in these peculiar situations. To favour this exchange of ideas, in the second half of each seminar we will discuss together one or more difficulties that PhD students may confront, trying to provide some plausible solutions

Our meetings are informal and questions from the audience are encouraged at all times. This cycle of seminars is organized by graduate students, and is intended for a student in the broad area of complex systems in the early stages of their careers.

RESEARCH TALK
Network Interplay: Competing Effects on Herd Immunity

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed gaps in our understanding of epidemic dynamics and the shortcomings of traditional models in real-world scenarios, particularly in comprehending herd immunity. This presentation will focus on how the structure of contact networks affects disease spread and intervention effectiveness. I will highlight the impact of pharmaceutical interventions like vaccination and non-pharmaceutical measures such as contact tracing on epidemic trajectories, considering factors like behavior-based homophily, group structures, spatial characteristics, and heterogeneities of contact networks. I will specifically discuss how herd immunity is influenced by the contact patterns between people in a non-trivial way.

DISCUSSION
Science communication in Network Science

Abstract: I’m a Network Epidemiologist who moonlights as a science writer for the public. I mainly contribute to science communication as the editor-in-chief of sitpor.org (FA). In this part of my talk, using my experiences, I will reflect on the situation of science communication in the network science community. I’ll discuss the opportunities and materials severely lacking at all levels such as the educational material for grad students and laypeople.

You thought we only organise seminars? No! The point of each seminar is to create a community, where we know each other's research topic and can start to collaborate, but also, more importantly, discuss the various problems that we find and face in our journey in Academia!

Thanks to the various discussions in our seminars and our previous two panels at NetSci 2023, we bring another topic of discussion at NetSciX 2024! Check it out in the dedicated section of our website.
