Nerve blocks are applied for pain treatment and management. There are different types of nerve blocks that serve a wide range of purposes.

Therapeutic nerve blocks are considered for the treatment of painful conditions. These nerve blocks consist of local anesthetic that may be used to regulate acute pain. Diagnostic nerve blocks are implemented to identify sources of pain. These particular blocks frequently include an anesthetic with a known duration of relief.

Typically, a group of nerves, known as a plexus or ganglion, that may be causing pain in a specific organ or body location can be blocked with a medication injected directly into a specified region of the body. The injection of the specific nerve-numbing agent is referred to as a nerve block.

Preemptive nerve blocks are meant to prevent pain following a procedure that can result in problems, including phantom limb pain. Nerve blocks can be utilized, in some cases, to prevent surgery, altogether.

Prognostic nerve blocks are used to predict the outcomes of treatments. For instance, a nerve block may be performed to determine if long-term procedures (such as surgery) might be successful in treating pain.

Various areas of pain require specific nerve block types. With a series of tests and consultations, we will determine the plan and approach that is right for you.
