Diagnostic nerve blocks are implemented to identify sources of pain. These particular blocks frequently include an anesthetic with a known duration of relief.

Typically, a group of nerves, known as a plexus or ganglion, that may be causing pain in a specific organ or body location can be blocked with a medication injected directly into a specified region of the body. The injection of the specific nerve-numbing agent is referred to as a nerve block.

Prognostic nerve blocks are used to predict the outcomes of treatments. For instance, a nerve block may be performed to determine if long-term procedures (such as surgery) might be successful in treating pain.
