Project: Internship Edition of Interview Like a STAR: Case Study
Role: Instructional Designer
Overview: This case study showcases the design and development of an eLearning module aimed at equipping college students with critical interview skills and professional etiquette to successfully secure internships. The project leverages scenario-based learning, interactive multimedia, and learner-centered design to address common challenges faced during interviews. Built using the ADDIE model, it serves as a benchmark for effective eLearning development in real-world contexts.
Technologies Used: Miro, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Creative Cloud, Google Workspace
Analysis
Target Audience: Oakmoss College students preparing for internship opportunities.
Situation: At Oakmoss College, many students face challenges during internship interviews.
Problem: 20% of candidates are declined due to scattered responses and lack of confidence.
Need: Improved interview skills and professional etiquette are crucial for success.
Data Collection: Surveys and interviews were hypothetically conducted with students and internship coordinators to understand the specific challenges faced during internship interviews.
Findings: Identified the need for structured guidance on the STAR method, basic interview etiquette, and strategies to boost confidence.
Understanding these factors allowed me to tailor the instructional content and delivery methods to maximize relevance and effectiveness.
Action Map
Using Miro, the action map outlines high-level goals and specific actions for learners to achieve these goals, ensuring course focus on desired outcomes and alignment with learning objectives.
Design
Instructional Design Model: ADDIE
ADDIE is an acronym for the five stages of the model: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation.
Learning Objectives
Identify the four components of the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
Demonstrate confident greeting techniques for interviewers.
Formulate relevant follow-up questions about the role and organization.
Select appropriate attire for a business interview setting.
Storyboard Creation
I developed a storyboard to outline the course structure and content flow. This storyboard served as a blueprint, ensuring that all instructional elements were logically organized and aligned with the learning objectives.
Development
Content development focused on addressing the challenges faced by students, mastering the STAR Method, and understanding professional etiquette. Interactive activities and multimedia elements were strategically integrated to enhance comprehension and retention.
I developed the content using Articulate Storyline, incorporating multimedia elements like videos, graphics, and quizzes created with Adobe Creative Cloud.
Challenges and Solutions
Engaging Diverse Learning Styles: Another challenge was creating content that engaged students with diverse learning styles, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners.
Solution: I addressed this by incorporating a variety of multimedia elements such as instructional videos, interactive quizzes, infographics, and scenario-based activities. This approach ensured that all types of learners could engage with the material effectively.
Implementation
Delivery Platform: Hypothetically, the course would be deployed on Oakmoss College's LMS.
Pilot Testing: In a real scenario, a pilot test would be conducted with a small group of students to gather initial feedback and make necessary adjustments.
Facilitation
Provided instructions on navigating the module.
Encouraged learners to engage with interactive elements and complete assessments.
Evaluation
Feedback Collection: Post-course surveys and knowledge assessments would be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the course in a real implementation.
Results
High satisfaction rates and significant improvement in knowledge retention and interview confidence were anticipated based on the course design.
Improvements: Based on hypothetical feedback, more interactive scenarios and refined quiz questions would be added.
Outcomes
Results: The course design received positive feedback in theoretical reviews, with a noticeable improvement anticipated in students' confidence and interview performance.
Impact: This course was designed to help students secure internship positions by improving their interview skills.
Reflection
Lessons Learned: This project reinforced the importance of iterative design and user feedback. Continuous testing and feedback are crucial for successful eLearning development.
Future Improvements: I plan to incorporate more frequent testing phases and expand the course content to include advanced interview techniques.
