The Nemuro Excursion 2024

Why don't you join us?

The Late Cretaceous sedimentary basin & alkaline basalts crop out around the Nemuro area, the northeastern most of Japanese mainland, where the Pacific tectonic plate sinks into the deep mantle at the Kuril trench. The presence of volcanoes at such cold places as those near the trench, called “forearc”, is generally strange. The forearc alkaline basalts, however, erupted on a submarine sedimentary basin in the Late Cretaceous Nemuro Group plausibly originated from the submarine "Panthalassa". The basaltic sills and pillows along the coast cause the present subaerial situation on the forearc setting of Nemuro, where the geological setting plausibly makes the unique topography and environment in the world. This excursion is going to investigate the unique setting of the Nemuro's sediments and shoshonites with a good scenery, and great fish & crab meals.

We love it!!

Sanma (pacific saury) sushi roll. A popular food on Nemuro!

"Esukaroppu" lunch plate. A Nemuro's unique meal!

Hanasaki crab

Quite rare & delicious crab, living only around the Okhotsk Sea even though in Japan. Nemuro's just original crab!

It is a seasonal crab in summer and very rich taste rather than other general crabs (ex, snow crab and red king crab). We find legs of snow crab on the right side of the picture.

Looks good!
