Nebraska Gov.-elect Jim Pillen selected Omaha as the venue for his inaugural ball, differing from his predecessor, Gov. Pete Ricketts, who hosted the event in Lincoln after both of his election victories.

Pillen will hold his inaugural ball at the CHI Health Center on Jan. 7. At a press conference Wednesday, incoming first lady Suzanne Pillen said the space was selected because they wanted a venue big enough to host a large group all on one floor.

Gale Sayers, who died in 2020, set the NFL record for touchdowns as a rookie in 1965 for the Chicago Bears. He twice led the NFL in rushing before a knee injury in 1968 shortened his career. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977.

Marlin Briscoe was a quarterback and wide receiver in the American Football League and National Football League. He was the first black quarterback to start a professional football game and played for nine years, winning two Super Bowls. He passed away in 2022.

Bob Gibson won the biggest awards in baseball during his 17 years with the St. Louis Cardinals, including two Cy Young awards, two times named the World Series MVP, nine Gold Glove awards, named a National League MVP, and two world Series championships. He passed away in 2020.

Johnny Rodgers won the Heisman Trophy as a Husker 50 years ago and went on to a professional football career in Canada and the U.S. He was named Rookie of the Year for the Canadian Football League and was a three-time all-star player for the CFL. He is currently a local businessman in Omaha.

Gale Sayers was a football player who played with the Chicago Bears, becoming the youngest person to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his career achievements. He passed away in 2020.

The city has a two-diamond ball fields (baseball & softball) with dugouts, bleacher seating, restrooms, batting cage, and concessions. The fields are covered with red field aggregate to improve playing conditions in wet weather.

The Huskers are dispersing around the country for summer-ball assignments and will report at various times in the coming weeks. For some, the trips are designed to develop and improve by stacking innings and plate appearances. Others are tasked with competing against better talent.

The 2023 American Legion Baseball All-Academic Team was announced during the American Legion World Series in Shelby, N.C., on Friday. The team is sponsored by Diamond Sports, a leading manufacturer in baseball merchandise and the official baseball used during American Legion Baseball national tournaments. As the official sponsor, Diamond Sports provides $25,000 in scholarships to the nine players on the All-Academic Team.

The NCAA recently conducted additional testing of the previously-certified 33 in./30 oz. Louisville Slugger 2020 Meta (-3) BBCOR baseball bat. The conclusion of this additional testing resulted in the NCAA and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) removing this specific model from their approved-for-play bat list. At this time, no other sizes of this bat model, or any previous model years of the bat model, have been decertified.

Peterson Baseball Field and Zimmerman Softball Field were both established in 1977. These fields honor Paul Peterson and R.D. "Moose" Zimmerman, Jr., both Dana alumni, for their significant contributions to local recreation programs. Peterson was an athletics director and a coach and faculty member at Dana College for many years. Zimmerman, a Blair resident, was instrumental in developing Blair's softball program.

Construction is underway on Nebraska Wesleyan's new baseball and softball fields. In a public-private partnership with Sandhills Global Youth Complex, NWU will have dedicated championship fields at the new youth baseball and softball complex near downtown Lincoln with opening games slated for Spring 2025.

Nebraska's baseball program was disjointed in its first decades, frequently disbanding for years at a time. The hiring of Tony Sharpe in 1947 brought stability to the program, but success was limited. Sharpe and his successor John Sanders combined to lead NU for fifty-one seasons, making just three NCAA tournament appearances between them. Nebraska hired Dave Van Horn in 1998 and he quickly turned the Huskers into a national power, making the program's first two College World Series appearances in 2001 and 2002. Mike Anderson took over for Van Horn and in 2005 led NU to its most successful season ever, including another College World Series trip. Anderson could not sustain this, however; since his departure in 2011 Nebraska has experienced modest success under head coaches Darin Erstad and Will Bolt.

Nebraska has been to the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship seventeen times and advanced to three College World Series. The Cornhuskers have won eight regular season conference championships and four conference tournament championships. Sixteen Huskers have been named First-Team All-Americans and Alex Gordon won the 2005 Golden Spikes Award as the best amateur baseball player in the country.

Following a decade of relative stability, Nebraska's baseball program was discontinued after the 1910 season at the request of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (later the Big Eight Conference), despite Nebraska's baseball team competing as an independent.[3] The MVIAA claimed that several of Nebraska's players had played for, and received payment from, minor league teams over the summer, violating the amateur status required of college athletes. After a year without a baseball team of any sort, the program was briefly revived in 1912, playing three games, before shuttering entirely.[3] The ending of World War I and subsequent influx of male students, along with the University of Nebraska's departure from the MVIAA, meant the school's baseball team could be revived under the guidance of Paul J. Schissler in 1919.[4] Schissler led NU's baseball and basketball programs until his departure for Lombard College in 1921; he later served as head coach of the National Football League's Chicago Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers and is credited with helping establish the Pro Bowl.[5]

After a second hiatus, Nebraska's baseball program was again revived in 1929 under the guidance of state native John Rhodes.[6] By this time the University of Nebraska had re-joined the MVIAA (which had changed its name to the Big Six Conference); NU won the Bix Six championship in its first-ever season of conference competition. Rhodes left for Wyoming in 1930 and Nebraska struggled through the next decade, never finishing higher than third in the Big Six. e24fc04721
