a. Photovoltaic (PV) modules: The performance of PV modules is dependent on the climatic conditions that they are exposed to. It has been found that hot climates are detrimental to the power generation of PV modules since the materials used in the modules degrade much faster at higher temperatures and lead to encapsulant browning and delamination. Moreover, modules frequently bear impact loads during transportation as well as high wind loads under usage. These stresses are high enough to initiate and propagate cracks in silicon with time. We work on modeling of stresses under various kinds of loading as well as development of novel PV materials that are more resistant to environmental damage.

b. Flexible solar cells: Limited efficiencies are not the only hurdles in the wide spread adoption of solar cells. Lack of reliability and mechanical robustness resulting in premature failure are significant deterrents to the commercialization of most solar cell technologies. We study the effect of composition of the layers, processing and the substrate on the damage tolerance of solar cells under different conditions of loading, temperature and environment.
