Laboratory of Catalytic Materials and Green Chemistry
Research Scope
Heterogeneous catalysis has long been a workhorse for the chemical industry and will likely play a more important role in the pursuit of circular economy to achieve net-zero. Production of chemicals from renewable sources relies on the better understanding of reaction mechanisms and the design of catalytic materials with exceptional activity and stability.
In LCG, we leverage principles from both materials and physical chemistry to synthesize heterogeneous catalysts with targeted functionalities. The reaction kinetics and mechanisms of these catalysts are then investigated for building the structure-activity relation, providing insight for the future optimization of technical catalysts.
Design and Synthesis of Catalytic Materials
We develop kinetically-controlled sol-gel coating and other synthetic approaches to engineer the micro-environment of the active sites. We use various surface characterization techniques to elucidate how these post-modifications improve the stability and selectivity of heterogeneous catalysts.
Valorization of Biomass and Carbon Dioxide
We produce value-added chemicals from renewable sources, including biomass and carbon dioxide. By applying in-situ spectroscopic techniques, mechanistic insights can be obtained during the reactions, which provide rationale for developing technical catalysts.
