Presenters
Keith C. Barton is Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at Indiana University. A former elementary teacher, his work emphasizes history education and civic participation in the United States and internationally. He is co-author, with Li-Ching Ho, of Curriculum for Justice and Harmony: Deliberation, Knowledge, and Action in Social and Civic Education.
Theresa Alviar-Martin’s research examines civic education through global and comparative perspectives. Her publications include several journal articles and two books: Research on Global Citizenship Education in Asia: Conceptions, Perceptions and Practice (Alviar-Martin & Baildon, 2021, Information Age); and Grassroots Organizing for K-12 Asian American Studies (An & Alviar-Martin, 2024, Palgrave).
Discussant
Carole L. Hahn is Professor Emerita, Educational Studies, Emory University. Known for her book Becoming Political: Comparative perspectives on citizenship education and work with the IEA Civic Education Study, she is a Past President of NCSS and a recipient of NCSS’ Career Research Award and the Distinguished Global Scholar Award.
Jongsung Kim is an Associate Professor at Hiroshima University and the president of the NCSS International Assembly. His research examines history and peace education from global perspectives. With colleagues, he authored Design Research in Social Studies Education (Rubin, Freedman, & Kim, 2019) and Lesson Study-based Teacher Education (Kim, Yoshida, Iwata, & Kawaguchi, 2021).
