Press Release, January 20th 2025
Simon Guthrie will be the Green Party of Canada’s candidate in Waterloo for the upcoming federal election.
WATERLOO – Since 2020, Simon Guthrie has been an active and committed member of the Green Party of Canada, inspired by its evidence-based policies, collaborative leadership, and focus on sustainability. Over the years, Simon has gained extensive experience within the Green movement, serving in communications and canvassing roles for recent provincial and federal elections. Volunteer, leadership, and governance roles in civil society organizations with local and national mandates have equipped him to build strong relationships and drive meaningful change. These roles have deepened Simon’s connections to the community and he is resolved to build a better future.
A longtime resident of Waterloo Region and an active community member, Simon is dedicated to advancing initiatives that promote social justice, housing security, and environmental stewardship. With graduate degrees in both Physics (University of Waterloo) and Peace & Conflict Studies (Conrad Grebel University College), Simon approaches challenges with a unique combination of technical and human perspectives. He is committed to working collaboratively and through consensus-building.
“We are facing a climate crisis that threatens our future and a cost-of-living crisis that’s crushing families—and yet, our government too often stands by as these problems escalate. I am frustrated by this lack of action and am committed to offering strong, compassionate leadership to Waterloo. It’s time for a government that doesn’t just acknowledge the pressing issues of our time but actively works to solve them—for our community and our future.” said Simon.
"I am thrilled to support Simon Guthrie as our candidate in Waterloo and to announce his appointment to the Green Party of Canada's Shadow Cabinet as our Critic for Democratic Reform," said Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. "Simon’s dedication to strengthening his community and his vision for a fairer Canada make him an outstanding leader for Waterloo and for our country."
Kitchener Centre MP Mike Morrice added, "Simon has been on the front lines of food security, restorative justice, and anti-poverty work in our community for many years - I'm thrilled he's putting himself forward to continue advocating for his community as the MP for Waterloo".
