Overview
The Woods Program is a week-long outdoor retreat near Elkins, WV for high school students. We especially cater to those interested in environmental justice, creative writing, journalism, and sustainability. This year it will be from August 3-8, 2024.
Students work with professional writers, scholars, activists, and journalists to compile a writing portfolio based on their experience at the retreat. Other activities include kayaking, guided hikes, site visits, and horseback riding.

Students accepted into the program will create a writing portfolio, meet authors and activists, and are eligible to win a $1000 scholarship.*
Lodging and Food
Participants stay in Camp Pioneer lodges
Lodging available by gender
3 meals provided daily (plus snacks and any other provisions)
Excursions
trips to Seneca Rocks and New River Gorge
Guided hikes with local foresters
Canoeing, horseback riding, and trips to local farm co-ops!

10 students max.
$125 for the week

* Students who participate can earn a $1,000 scholarship to use toward tuition at Davis & Elkins College. This scholarship is not transferrable to other schools.
