Lizann Flatt has developed a series of nature picture books that are suitable for teaching number sense, patterns and shapes in the context of the natural world. Each book in her series covers one season of the year, which also ties in nicely with observing seasonal change, and is suitable for the early primary grades.

Math for All Seasons by Greg Tang helps students use pattern, symmetry and number to problem solve. Most of his books are not necessarily nature-based, but they use the natural world to help students become flexible problem solvers. Also check out his newest book, Math Potato.

Aim:  Urbanized environments may stimulate unhealthy food choices and stress. Several theories explain that exposure to green nature can counter these stress effects. Since we spend most time indoors, integrating nature in the interior could be a promising health promotion tool. Hence, we tested whether the beneficial effect of nature for stress recovery is also present in indoor settings via the use of plants or green colors, and whether it is applicable on eating behavior as a new outcome.

Methods:  The 92 participants (18-30y, 16% men) were divided into four groups. Each viewed a 6-min slideshow with room pictures containing either green plants, green objects, greyscale plants or greyscale objects to allow distinction between color- and plant-effects. Group differences were tested for the perceived restorativeness scale, psychological recovery and eating behavior. To allow psychological recovery testing, participants were exposed to a stressor before the picture slideshow via the Trier Social Stress Test. The change of self-reports (stress, positive and negative affect) and psychophysiology (heart rate and vagal-induced heart rate variability RMSSD) post-slideshow versus pre-slideshow was checked. Eating behavior outcomes included change in hunger, craving, and food choice (for fruits, vegetables and snacks).

Results:  From the four picture sets, the green plants pictures were reported as most mentally restorative and appeared most beneficial for post-stressor recovery of positive affect, but not for negative affect or stress recovery. The green plants group also had higher preference for vegetables and lower preference or craving for (unhealthy) snacks. Those significant group differences were mainly due to the presence of plants and only occasionally due to the green color.

Conclusion:  Indoor green plant pictures were associated with higher mental restorativeness and healthier food choices. Integrating plants in the interior seems to be a relevant health promotion approach, while applying green colors seems less relevant.

We all know (or were!) a kid who loves to stuff their pockets full of nature items. This engaging nonfiction title introduces famous scientists who got their start doing just that. Great for introducing habits of scientists.

Three adventurous kids are off on a hike, each with their own style. Hattie leads the way, Wren documents everything in her sketchbook, and El brings the cheerful energy. Add this to your picture books about enjoying nature in your own way.

Sing a Song of Seasons : A Nature Poem for Each Day of the Year. ed. by Fiona Waters. Want to put a little nature adoration into each and every day? How about a nature poem to star the day! You will love having this coffee table-sized poetry book sitting out all year. Gorgeous, colorful illustrations grace the pages which contain a nature poem to read aloud every day.

Daniel Finds a Poem by Micha Archer. Nothing goes together quite like poetry and nature. In anticipation of a poetry in the park event, Daniel asks his animal friends, "What is poetry?" They all give him different answers which inspires Daniel to write his own ode to nature. Charming!

The Raft by Jim LaMarche. Nicky goes to visit his grandmother who lives by a river in the woods. At first he thinks the summer is going to be boring, but Nicky's grandmother encourages him to get outside. On the river he discovers a raft. He takes it out one afternoon and it becomes his daily activity. While floating every day, he admires the local flora and fauna. He even begins sketching what he sees. What I also love about this book is the development of the relationship between Nicky and his grandparent. Also check out his picture book, Pond.

The Little Gardener by Emily Hughes. A very little gardener brings large-sized beauty to his garden. The little gardener works hard tending nature and the reader looks at the wonders of nature from his perspective. When a full-sized girl takes over the tending, kids will enjoy comparing how they see a garden to how the little guy does. Marvelous illustrations.

Finding Wild by Megan Wagner Lloyd. Two children discover the natural world in their urban landscape. I love how this book celebrates the diversity of wildlife and plants in cities throughout the season. The two children wander away down a path from the subway entrance and find waterways, insects, birds, gorgeous flowers and trees. Best of all, when they are back in the structured environment of the city, they realize all that nature is actually right in their own backyard.

In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming. This is a great read aloud book for preschoolers. Snappy onomatopoetic text takes the reader on a journey down in to the secret world of tall grass in a meadow-like environment. Fleming's signature torn paper collage make a bold accompaniment to the lively text.

You Are Home: An Ode to the National Parks by Evan Turk. Do not miss this gorgeous-gorgeous-gorgeous picture book that pays tribute to our national treasures. The lyrical text takes readers on a journey through the parks, allowing us to meet animals in their own habitat, experience people enjoying the great outdoors and reveling in the marvels that live and grow in the American National Parks. Have I sung the praises of this book enough for you? Go out and get it right away.

I would love to post my recently published nonfiction picture book for ages 4-8 on your list. It is entitled "Come Walk in the Fynbos with Me". It would fit perfectly in your Nature group. In it a child and an adult set off on a walk through one of the most diverse biomes on earth--the fynbos at the very tip of Africa. The landscape from a distance seems dull, grey scrubland, but the twosome soon discovers the bizarre shapes, flashes of brillance and peculiar habits of the plants nestled in teh dry landscape. They cross the paths of birds, bees, snakes and animals that inhabit and help sustain the fynbos. This is a place that few will visit but many may come to love through this picture book walk. I have also a short teachers guide to introducing biomes and the cycle of life that perpetuates them. This can be a jumping off point for a wider exploration of biomes.

This beautiful 40-acre nature preserve offers handicapped accessible restrooms at the trailhead, and a couple of miles of paved and wood-shipped trails. A boardwalk with a bench offers scenic views and opportunities for nature observation over the wetland.

I have been struggling lately with when to start teaching my young kids about the ecological crises facing our planet. My son is a curious four year old and is starting to ask questions about conversations he overhears. While we try to answer him in age appropriate ways, it can be hard to know how much to explain. I want him to value the natural world and understand the importance of protecting it, but I don't want to overwhelm him either. To help, I have turned to picture books that promote an appreciation of nature. Fostering connections to the environment provides a solid foundation for greater environmental awareness and action as children grow older. Here are some recommendations of picture books that can be used with young children and also as read aloud texts to prompt conversation with older kids. e24fc04721
