I assume this will be amazing with pressed or loose powder mineral foundations. But I would like to know how this primer holds up with concealers, foundations, blushes, and highlighters of a creamy or liquid consistency. Does it help the foundation adhere as well?

Brooke, a little tip when applying powdered eye shadow is to pat it onto your eyelid instead of swiping. If you put your showdown on in a patting motion and in the #7 shape it goes on better; I do have some YouTube videos demonstrating this.
I get a lot of questions about natural makeup options, and this was definitely one of the tougher things for me to find natural alternatives for. In college, I practically collected makeup, and had endless tubes, compacts, and brushes that never even got half used.
While there are some good natural alternatives that you can buy (see list below), the cheapest, easiest and most natural way is to just make your own, and you might have all of the ingredients in your kitchen already!
I absolutely love the oil cleansing method, which leaves skin very soft and smooth by using natural oils to balance the skin. I typically use the oil cleansing method at night and wash my face with raw honey if needed in the morning. You can also use a natural sugar scrub (equal parts sugar and natural oil) or natural microdermabrasion (baking soda) to make skin look younger.
Homemade Option: At the recommendation of a friend who had used cocoa powder for natural bronzer, I started experimenting with natural foundation options, and came up with a recipe similar to a mineral make-up.
I start with a base of arrowroot powder and zinc oxide (can also use cornstarch, but arrowroot works better) and then slowly add in cocoa powder and finely ground cinnamon powder until you get a shade close to your skin tone. You can then store in a jar or old powder container and use a brush to apply. It took me a few tries of mixing to get the color correct for my skin tone, but most days, a quick brush of this is all I need. I later discovered that adding gold mica powder gave it an even smoother texture and made skin radiant.
Boutique Homemade Option: For a slightly more customizable and longer lasting homemade option, use zinc oxide powder (non nano and uncoated) as a base and add cocoa powder and a red or pink hued mica powder to get the desired color.
Homemade Options:Always be careful when using any products, even natural ones, near the eyes. I mix up several colors of eye shadow using cocoa powder (brown shades) Spirulina (green shades) and arrowroot (light shades). My favorite is just cocoa powder with a tiny bit of arrowroot mixed in for smoothness.
For eye-liner, I either use a tiny bit of cocoa powder mixed with coconut oil, or a tiny dab or activated charcoal and whipped shea butter. Be careful not to get either one in the eye. I store the eye shadow in an old powdered eye shadow container and apply with my finger or a very slightly damp brush.
To make a smoother eyeliner, I mix equal parts of coconut oil and shea butter (about 1/2 ounce of each) and add about 1/2 tsp of activated charcoal to make a black eyeliner that is thicker. You can also do this with cocoa powder for a brown hue.
Is the powder foundation also an option for dry shampoo? I noticed that your recipe for dry shampoo was just arrowroot powder and essential oils. Would the zinc oxide not be ideal to transfer over to the dry shampoo? Just wondering if I can use my already made powder foundation recipe for 2 uses.
Personally, I think that the perfect and most beautiful natural makeup is one where you can see the effect, but where the products are applied almost invisibly. When I apply natural makeup on myself, I almost always choose the accent on my eyes and keep my lips calm.

One of the best things I did for myself was to get a makeup session with a makeup artist whose work I admired (she knew how to make clients look like the best version of themselves, not too heavy-handed). She went through everything step-by-step, she did one side, I did the other. And she gave me the list of products and brushes used along with a sheet describing everything we had done. If you can find an artist who offers this service, I highly recommend.

Thank you for shedding light on this. I always always check with EWG Beauty Database. Always. There are some brands that started organic and natural but once they got big they immediately started putting a lot of chemicals/toxins in their products.

I have used Burt bees lipstick for a very long time as I thought they are 100% natural and I stopped buying other brands. Several months ago I was told they use carmine as one of the ingredients.. I was shocked. I sent them a complain letter and they refuse to honor my request.
This is very disappointing. One of the reasons I looked into them is because I *thought* they had natural products for those with brown skin. It is so hard to find safe products for honey, caramel, cocoa skin etc. If I have any luck it is usually lighter colors. If you know any reputable safe brands in this regard please share

This is a good read. As a vegan, I am constantly reading labels before I buy any food or skin products. But now, you have to be well informed about the manufacturing companies as well as the ingredients that go into their products. Its almost like you have to be a private investigator. I am so glad I came across this, it has opened my eyes to shopping for cruelty free products. Do you know any companies that make good quality tinted moisturizer that is 100 percent cruelty free ? Also is the company 100percentpure cruelty free?
I buy cruelty free and vegan products such as Inika, World organic, Living nature that do make tinted moisturisers (I also know of Juice beauty but have never tried their products). There are many out there. I live in New Zealand so I am not sure if the Inika, World organic or Living nature brands would be readily available in the shops for you (i.e where you live). THANK YOU so much for this article. I was just in Sephora and asked if they had any organic lines and was directed to the Tarte display. The sales gal went on and on about how organic they were and was ready to sell me the whole line. I told her I needed to come home and investigate. In the last 3 months I have thrown out all my makeup and skincare products in search of organic and non toxic. Everytime I think I find something I come home to research only to find another case of greenwashing. Why is it so hard to find actual organic products??!
