PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Rao Khan, the founder of the estate was said to be the son of a Brahmin named Suchhmoni, by his wife, a daughter of Raja Manik Chand of Manikpur. He built the village of Kanhpur, between Salon and Pratapgarh, overthrew the Bhars, and laid the foundations of a large estate, which is presently (1929) the largest in the district after Khajurgaon and consists of 37 mahals and five portions in Mohanganj, 34 mahals and parts of two others in Rokha, twelve mahals in Parshadepur, ten mahals and two pattis in Rae Bareli, four mahals and six pattis in Inhauna, one village in Dalmau, and one village and part of another in Salon. In addition to this the Raja owns the Mustafabad estate of 28 villages in Ateha, as well as a large portion of the Patti Saifabad taluqa recently purchased, and the single village of Suratgarh in Sultanpur. The property is now under tbe management of the Court of Wards, with the exception of fourteen villages and three pattis held by guzaradars in maintenance ^(#2). Estate holders were....

• Raja SURAT SINGH, Raja of Tiloi fl. 1670/1680, though blind, he was a man of great enterprise and ability, he thoroughly established his position as head of the clan and extended his rule over fourteen parganas, he was defeated by the Sombansis of Pratapgarh at Hindaur, married and had issue.

• Raja GOPAL SINGH, Raja of Tiloi, he was of no particular ability, married and had issue. He was killed by his own son.

• Raja MOHAN SINGH, Raja of Tiloi -/1743, blind in one eye, he too was a man of great energy; he hastened the death of his father, who was favoring his younger brother as his successor; he attacked the Sayids of Mustafabad in Salon and seized their estate, he was defeated by the Bais Rajputs, he then turned his attention to the Bhale Sultans of Jagdishpur, subdued them and then attempted to invade Bachhrawan, but was beaten back by the Raja of Kurri-Sudauli; towards the end of his reign he was forced to submit to the Nawab Wazir, Sa'adat Khan; married 1stly, a Bisen Rani of Rampur, married 2ndly, a Bharelia Rani of Surajpur, and had issue. He died 1743.

• Raja PREM SINGH, Raja of Tiloi 1743/1748, ruled for five years, married a Gaharwar Rani of Bijaipur, and had issue. He died 1748.

  • Raja Balbhaddar Singh (qv)

• Raja BALBHADDAR SINGH, Raja of Tiloi 1748/1784, his whole life was spent in arms and pne of his first exploits was the protection of the Raja of Bansi against the Surajbansi of Amroha and the Pathans of Sattasi; he was granted an Imperial mansab of 4,000 later raised to 5,000, making him one of the few Taluqdars in Oudh to rise to such a lofty position or rank; his claim to possession of fourteen parganas was admitted by the Nawab Wazir; the last years of his life were spent in fruitless rebellion against the Nawab Wazir, and he was eventually killed on the banks of the Kandu Nala near Jagdishpur; married 1stly, the Senior Rani, committed sati in 1784, married 2ndly, the Junior Rani, and had adoptive issue. He was killed sp in 1784.

• Raja SHANKAR SINGH, Raja of Tiloi, he was adopted by the Junior Rani of his predecessor, he was a prudent and peaceful chief and by his exertions, managed to secure the Tiloi property which had been denied to him; married and had issue.

• Raja BUNIAD SINGH, Raja of Tiloi, married and had adoptive issue, his nephew. He died sp.

• Raja JAGPAL SINGH, Raja of Tiloi -/1875, he at first joined the rebels in 1857, but made his submission early in 1858, for which he was rewarded with a grant of land; Honorary Magistrate; he was invested with the powers of an Assistant Commissioner in 1860; married Rani Harbans Kuer, and had issue. He died 15th September 1875.

• Raja Bahadur SURPAL SINGH, Raja of Tiloi 1875/1900, born 13th December 1870, he succeeded to the gadi as a minor in 1875 ^(#1), the title of Raja was formally recognized 4th December 1877, the title of Raja Bahadur was granted as a hereditary distinction on 28th December 1882, married Rani Jagannath Kuer, died 7th August 1933, she adopted a Kumar from Chiloli on 21st February 1901; and had adoptive issue. He died spl on 21st June 1900.

Raja Bahadur BISHWANATH SARAN SINGH, Raja of Tiloi 1920/1946, born 29th March 1899, he was adopted from Chiloli on 21st February 1901 and succeeded to the gadi on 5th June 1901, appointed an Honorary Magistrate, 2nd Class; Member of the Legislative Council; married 1stly, Rani Aditya Binai Kumari of Balrampur, died sp in 1971, married 2ndly, 1926, Rani Phanindra Rajya Lakshmi Devi, daughter of Supradipta Manyabara Gen. HH Maharajkumar Sir Baber Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana of Nepal (see Lambjung and Kaski), and his wife, Rani Deva Vakta Lakshmi Devi, married 3rdly, Rani Sonami Devi, and had issue. He died 8th November 1946.
