PREDECESSORS AND SHORT HISTORY: Junagadh was originally the kingdom of the Chudasama Rajputs for over four hundred years, until it was conquered by Sultan Muhammad Beg in 1473. The modern state was founded in 1730, when Sherkhan Babi, a soldier of fortune and officer under the subah, expelled the Deputy Governor and established his rule in Junagadh. The State follows the rule of Primogeniture for succession, and it also had a Sanad of adoption. His Highness the Nawab maintains a military force of 251 cavalry, 1972 infantry and 66 guns, and is entitled to a salute of 11 guns (as of 1892). Rulers were...

Nawab Saheb Salabat Muhammadkhan Babi 1725/1730, was given and established the house of Viramgam and Gogha, Deputy Governor of Junagadh; willed his territory to his sons, with the eldest recieving Junagadh and the younger sons sharing in the Bantva district; married and had issue. He died of cholera in 1730 at Ahmedabad.

Capt. HH Nawab Saheb Sir MUHAMMED MAHABAT KHANJI III RASUL KHANJI G.C.S.I., K.C.S.I., 9th Nawab of Junagadh 1911/1959, born 2nd August 1900 (#3), educated in England and at Mayo College, Ajmer; he succeeded to the gadi on 22nd January 1911 (#5 p.314); he was invested with full ruling powers on 31st March 1920 (#5 p.320); in recognition of the services of the state to the British war effort during WWI, the salute was permanently raised to 13 guns on 1st January 1918; the Nawab was granted a personal 15 gun salute and a 15 gun local salute on 15th January 1921; he was made a K.C.S.I. [cr. 1st November 1926], and a G.C.I.E. [cr. 1st January 1931] (#5 p.320); married HH Nawab Munawar Jahan Begum Saheb of Bhopal and had issue. He died 7th November 1959 at Karachi.

Wheatley as Tutor and Guardian, then at Hailybury College, England (1933/38); married 1stly, 30th November 1945, married 2ndly, HH Nawab Shah Begum Sahiba, and had issue. He died 1989.
