The entire history of the Russian Empire is one of relentless annexations and conquests. Through more than 60 wars, Russia expanded its territory but never managed to properly govern these lands. The peoples crushed under the weight of Russian imperialism have resisted and continue to resist, preserving their identities.
In the 20th century alone, nations enslaved by Russia attempted twice to break free from Moscow’s yoke — once during the collapse of the Russian Empire and again during the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Unfortunately, both attempts were unsuccessful.
But this book is not about the empire’s invincibility.
It is about great, free nations that have fought and will continue to fight for their freedom.
The first comprehensive publication in Ukraine that explores the centuries-long history of the liberation struggles of nations subjugated by Russia — none of whom voluntarily sought to become part of the empire.
Instead, they seized every opportunity to fight for independence and freedom from their oppressor and colonizer.
