Inmate Case Files, 1902-1922National Archives Identifier 607937This series consists of individual case files for each inmate who entered the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta before 1921. Information contained in the file may include full name, other names used, inmate number, age at date of sentencing, race, date of incarceration, place of conviction, crime, sentence, fine amount and court fines and costs (if any), full-term release date, actual release date, and dispensation of inmate. Examples of dispensation include: served full sentence, good conduct time release, pardoned, medical early release, paroled, or deceased.
Additional information also available on most prisoners includes a fingerprint card, a "mug shot" photograph of the inmate with front and profile views, physical description, citizenship, birthplace, level of education, birthplace of parents, and age at which the inmate left home.
Files also include information related to the inmate's time in the correctional institution, including any violation of prison rules and punishment received, medical treatment requested and received, incoming and outgoing mail logs, copies of letters sent and received by inmates, education and training received, and work experience and work assignments.
