Discovering How to Identify Winter Trees
Presented by Bruce Lund, Botanist-biologist, Prior Nature Center Director and Ranger-Naturalist at the Cape Cod National Seashore
It’s now late fall and almost all the leaves are gone from local deciduous trees. They’re starting to all look alike. So how does one identify them? The Nashua Garden Club is excited about the return of Bruce Lund, ranger-naturalist and botanist-biologist who will speak to “Discovering How to Identify Winter Trees”. The public is invited, free of charge, to this timely session at 7:00 PM, Wednesday November 6th, at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester Street, Nashua NH.
Botanist-biologist, Bruce Lund has been a ranger-naturalist at the Cape Cod National Seashore and the director of nature centers in multiple states including Massachusetts, Georgia, Nebraska, New York, and Nevada. Now “retired” in Nashua, he leads a variety of walks and programs at the Beaver Brook Association in Hollis NH.
At this event, Mr. Lund will conduct an interactive Winter Tree Identification program using twigs, buds, and fruits of locally occurring trees. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to identify trees without leaves through use of sight, touch and smell. Participants are encouraged to practice their newly learned skills by bringing a magnifying glass, if they have one, and, if they like, a twig with buds and fruits (if any) from their yard or nearby park. Illustrated handouts that organize the identification process will also be available.
All are welcome. There will be time for Q&A and light refreshments. A members-only business meeting will follow this session. To inquire about membership in the Nashua Garden Club, please see the membership page on this website. Further questions can be sent to NashuaGardenClub@Gmail.com .
All About Potting Mixes
Many gardeners take their houseplants outside for the summer. They need to come back into the house before the weather gets too cold. Being outside, these plants can pick up some unwanted guests. To prevent bringing in any hitchhiking insects, I suggest that these houseplants are taken out of their pots, and the soil rinsed off their roots. Then they should be repotted into fresh potting mix. Asian Jumping Worms: Invasive Species Reports
Wisdom tells us that earthworms are good for the soil. They improve drainage and aeration, increase nutrients, and enhance soil structure. While this may be true of some earthworm species, a family of more recently introduced earthworms are changing how we look at worms. Jumping worms are an invasive earthworm introduced to North America from eastern Asia. They have the potential to dramatically change soil structure, impact forest ecology, and reduce biodiversity. And they are present here in New Hampshire.
Learn how to look out for this species and help prevent their spread in the reference section of our Resources and Links page!
