Growing a Pollinator Garden
Presented by Jane Raymond, Master Gardener and Goffstown Conservation Commission member
You’ve most likely heard recent, disturbing reports discussing the significant decline in the populations of wild pollinators such as bees and butterflies. The Nashua Garden Club is inviting the greater Nashua community to hear how to help by encouraging and supporting these natural pollinators while enhancing our own backyard landscapes. The program “Growing a Pollinator Garden” is open to the public free of charge 7:00 PM, Wednesday February 5th, at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester Street, Nashua NH. The guest presenter is Jane Raymond, Master Gardener, educator and Goffstown Conservation Commission member.
Ms. Raymond became a Master Gardener in 2022 after retiring from 45 years of teaching high school. She was a farmer at a young age where she developed a love of plants and animals. These experiences led to an undergraduate degree in chemistry and a master’s degree in biology. Possessing a love of education, she has also taught adults as an adjunct at the UNH School for Lifelong Learning. As a member of the Goffstown Conservation Commission, Ms. Raymond spends her time managing a 100-acre wood lot and tending her home vegetable and flower gardens. Her home garden is designated as a Pollinator Habitat and is registered with the National Wildlife Federation as Certified Wildlife Habitat.
This session will discuss how insects are helpful, and in some cases, essential, in pollinating many of our food crops. Hear about the recent, significant decline in the populations of these wild pollinators. Attendees will see how planting patches of flowers, wildflowers, grasses, shrubs, and flowering trees with an emphasis on the use of native plants can encourage and support natural pollinators while enhancing backyard landscapes. Recommendations will be presented on creating a pollinator habitat in our New Hampshire yards.
All are welcome. There will be time for Q&A and light refreshments. A members-only business meeting will follow this session. To inquire about membership in the Nashua Garden Club, please see the membership page on this website. Further questions can be sent to NashuaGardenClub@Gmail.com .
Seed Catalogues
Our gardens are finished for the season and our yards have been cleaned up. As the New England weather gets cold, we turn inward. We find things to do inside our houses. The one place that is busy now is our mailboxes. They are filling up with seed catalogs. We asked several Nashua Garden Club members about their favorite seed companies and thought it would be a nice resource of places to buy seeds.
One thing that is important to understand as you shop for seeds is the difference between hybrid seeds and heirloom or open pollinated seeds. Some seed companies specialize in hybrid seeds, others offer both or will just supply open pollinated options.
Learn more about the types of seeds, the differences between them and their characteristics. This will help you shop as you peruse some suggested sources for seeds.

Asian Jumping Worms: Invasive Species Reports
Wisdom tells us that earthworms are good for the soil. They improve drainage and aeration, increase nutrients, and enhance soil structure. While this may be true of some earthworm species, a family of more recently introduced earthworms are changing how we look at worms. Jumping worms are an invasive earthworm introduced to North America from eastern Asia. They have the potential to dramatically change soil structure, impact forest ecology, and reduce biodiversity. And they are present here in New Hampshire.
Learn how to look out for this species and help prevent their spread in the reference section of our Resources and Links page!
