Joan Bonnette, Master Gardener, New Hampshire Tree Steward and Nashua Garden Club Vice-president and Plant Sale Chair
No matter the size of your garden, it’s likely to include one or many containers – outdoors, indoors, on your deck or on your stoop. You are invited to gather a few new gardening and design tips to enhance your ‘gardens in a pot’ by attending the Nashua Garden Club’s April program, “Container Gardening”. This session is open to the public free of charge and will begin promptly at 7:00 PM on Wednesday April 1st at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester Street, Nashua NH.
Guest speakers will be Joan Bonnette, Master Gardener, Tree Steward and Vice President of the Nashua Garden Club and Tina Rufo, Master Gardener, President of the New England Hosta Society and President of the Nashua Garden Club. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by 6:45 PM in order to be seated and settled prior to the start of the program.
Ms. Bonnette will pull from her 30-plus years of gardening experience and horticultural training. She will cover major considerations, from design principles, to how to plant and care for the specimens included in the containers. Ignite your imagination with fresh ideas for containers themselves, learn about types of plants well suited to these gardens and hear about novel locations where they can be placed around your home and garden.
Along with this information, attendees will be treated to a demonstration of how to construct these ‘gardens in a pot’ by Ms. Rufo. Her passion for gardening began ‘many’ years ago in her Grandmother’s garden and has grown nonstop over the years. With formal training and experience, her interest blossomed into a full time avocation. Tina now serves as an officer of various garden clubs and volunteers at numerous public and charitable gardens. On this evening, she will apply design and planting principles and while she creates a container or two right before your eyes.
All are welcome and requested to arrive by 6:45 for this 7:00 PM session. Following the presentation, there will be time for Q&A and light refreshments. A members-only business meeting will follow. To inquire about membership in the Nashua Garden Club, please see the membership page on this website. Further questions can be sent to NashuaGardenClub@Gmail.com .
Keeping weeds at bay is a large part of what we do to maintain our gardens. Did you ever take notice what kind of plant they are as you are pulling them out? Have you given them much thought? They are plants after all.
Did you realize that, like our own plants, that there are seasons for weeds? Certain ones come up only in the spring while others surface in summer. Weed can actually have a home in your garden. Read on and maybe you'll see weeds in a new light.

Subject: I Have a Question
Wisdom tells us that earthworms are good for the soil. They improve drainage and aeration, increase nutrients, and enhance soil structure. While this may be true of some earthworm species, a family of more recently introduced earthworms are changing how we look at worms. Jumping worms are an invasive earthworm introduced to North America from eastern Asia. They have the potential to dramatically change soil structure, impact forest ecology, and reduce biodiversity. And they are present here in New Hampshire.
Learn how to look out for this species and help prevent their spread in the reference section of our Resources and Links page!
The Nashua Garden Club is an independent non-denomination club that devotes itself to the diverse needs and interests of its many-faceted member gardeners. Founded in 1961, the Club's uniqueness lies in its accommodation to its members by holding meetings in the evening. The Club's mission is to encourage its members to fully involve themselves in learning about and participating in the many and varied aspects of horticulture, landscape design, floral design, and the civic beautification of our community.
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:00 to 9:00 pm (doors open at 6:30 pm) at the First Baptist Church, 121 Manchester Street, Nashua NH and via Zoom. You are welcome to send us email at NashuaGardenClub@gmail.com and see us on Facebook.
