The monthly MIT.nano seminar was first presented to the community in 2019 through the "Perspectives in Nanotechnology" lectures, an introductory set of talks by experts who have played seminal roles in the progress of our understanding of the nanoscale in key areas over the past decades. Organized by assistant professor Farnaz Niroui, the series was met with much enthusiasm from members of the MIT and nano communities, and so the MIT.nano seminar series continues to offer monthly talks from researchers across the spectrum of nanoscience and nanoengineering.

Talks last approximately 45 minutes and are followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session. Once a year, MIT.nano will welcome a member of the MIT.nano Consortium to give the seminar. Suggestions for guest speakers can always be sent to mitnano@mit.edu.

This seminar is aimed at presenting the Nanotechnology Task Force report on the progress FDA made in nanotechnology since 2007. It will include the basics of nanotechnology, highlight the facilities, regulatory science research, guidance documents, standards, domestic and international collaborations, and emerging challenges in regulatory science.

Dr. Anil Patri serves as the Chair, Nanotechnology Task, and as the Director of Nanocore, National Center for Toxicological Research, US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). Nanocore conducts nanotechnology regulatory science research to understand material characteristics, what parameters contribute to their safety, and efficacy through internal research projects. Nanocore also offers staff training and develops consensus standards through stakeholder collaboration. Dr. Patri serves on the U.S. National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) NSET Subcommittee and NEHI working group for US government inter-agency coordination. He is as member of ISO TC229 and serves on the executive committee of ASTM E56 to facilitate standards development. He served on journal editorial and scientific advisory boards.

Prior to joining FDA in 2014, Dr. Patri served as the Deputy Director, Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory (NCL) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. In a decade long tenure at NCL, he managed over 85 projects for the preclinical evaluation of nanomaterial for cancer. He developed nanotechnology-based targeted drug delivery and imaging agents until 2004 at the University of Michigan Medical School. He is a synthetic chemist by training and earned his Ph.D., in Chemistry from the University of South Florida.

Submission: Reports should be emailed to the program office (nanomast@seas.upenn.edu) either as they are completed or in a single email. Students are encouraged to attend these seminars throughout their program and not wait until the last semester.

ObservatoryNANO states that the aim of the EHS landscaping report is to provide a map and overview of key organizations and their activities within the field worldwide in relation to nano-EHS. ObservatoryNANO intends the landscaping document to support communication of efforts, outlining those key initiatives, activities, and projects within the field. According to ObservatoryNANO, because of the challenge of keeping track of the rapidly changing field, the landscaping document provides only a snapshot of efforts ongoing within 2011, and will change with time.

Nanofilm Ltd has been one of the earliest pioneers of nanotechnology. In the early 1980s, Dr Scott Rickert, Nanofilm co-founder, was already working on self-assembling thin films as part of his research as a professor at Case Western Reserve University. The company was launched as a spin-off of that work and was co-founded in 1985 by Dr Rickert and businessman Don McClusky. The nanotechnology industry in Ohio has grown healthy, with products that are ready to hit the market already. The state also has a steadfast culture of nanotechnology education and research that will certainly help widen the nanotechnology industry.

As concrete is one of the most used construction materials, lowering its environmental impacts is crucial for a more sustainable built environment. Advancements in nanotechnology over the past decade have paved the way for the creation of novel material compositions that have opened several avenues for the applicability of nano-engineered concrete. Extensive research on the use of nanomaterials has shown remarkable improvement in strength, durability, thermal-electrical properties, self-healing, and self-cleaning of concrete due to their nanoscopic functionalities. Effective dispersion of nanomaterials plays an important role in altering the concrete properties at nanoscale, which directly improves the micro and macro-scale performance of concrete. This talk will focus on the wide applications of nanomaterials in concrete from their synthesis to performance enhancement to environmental impact. Literature suggests the effective and systematic study of nanomaterials is not only limited to mechanical and durability property improvement but also promotes the reduction of cement content, which might result in a reduction of CO2 emissions.

Nanotechnology attracts attention in Kazakhstan like other countries, and a research institute in KNU was established by the government. A seminar on Plasma Nanotechnology was planned based on the requests from KNU. Professor Laifa Boufendi was invited from France, and he gave his lecture on the basics of plasma and applied technology.

Nanotechnology Research Experience for Teachers is a year-long program for Greater Houston Area teachers. The program includes a 6-week internship in a nanotechnology research laboratory at Rice University, seminars, presentations based on research done at Rice, and school year workshops.

Nanomaterials offer some distinct advantages to remediation technologies such as large surface-area-to-volume ratio and high chemical reactivity. Superfund researchers are also looking at how nanomaterials behave in the environment as they are used for remediation.
