Who would've thought that silence can be so loud? This August, MyVolunteer (MyVo) hosted the flagship Speak with Heart 5.0 event. The aim of this event is to educate volunteers about the situation of deaf people and learn about sign languages in Malaysia to reduce inequalities (SDG10). This event was held in collaboration with Malaysian Relief Agency (MRA), which plays a crucial role in making this event a reality.
Early in the morning, the volunteers gathered at Dewan Dedaru, INTEC, eager for the workshop. All volunteers got a button badge, marking the wonderful adventure they're about to delve in. As the speakers arrive, everyone was shocked to find that the instructor herself is a deaf person.
A translator lead the voiceover of the instructor. It was a first hand experience for everyone to actually having to engage with a deaf person while learning sign language.
The event began with a sign language workshop. The instructor demonstrates each gestures one by one so that everyone can follow and learn with her. It was such an engaging experience as everyone not only get to learn it by heart, but get to apply it practically using their hands to communicate.
Some volunteers even came in front of the audience as well to demonstrate their understandings of using sign language in daily situations.
The most unique things in this event is to know that deaf people can sing! The instructors held special session to teach all participants to sing Negaraku and Jalur Gemilang using sign language. The participants was divided into groups and a battle was held to see who can sing it more "harmonically."
Lastly, the event came to a halt and everyone was given free lunch. Overall, Speak with Heart 5.0 was a resounding success, fostering greater awareness and skills in sign language while encouraging meaningful connections with the deaf community.
