Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the dog are sent to stay with an old friend Prodessor Hayling and his son Tinker. The Professor is also a famous scientist, who has built a tower in his garden housing his secret research.
A circus is taking place in the Professors field and the children visit and become befriends with some of the circus folk, particulalry Sam and his Chimpanzee called Charlie, who are working on an new act .
When top secret papers belonging to the scientist go missing, it is left up to the children to find the thief.
