Julian, Dick, Anne, George, and Timmy the dog are on a hike . There is lots of police activity as they search for an excaped convict.
The five realise they won;t make their destination in time and decide to spend the night at an old barn. During the night, Dick is awakened by a voice calling his name. He is given a cryptic message, "Two Trees. Gloomy Water. Saucy Jane. And Maggie knows too"
The children try to tell the police that Dick say had contact with the convict but because Dick's watch has stopped he gets the time wrong and the policeman doesn't believe him.
Anne spots a sign to gloomy water and the Five decide to investigate thmesleves. Whilst looking around an old house near Gloomy water, the children over hear a conversation between Dirty Dick and Maggie, who are searching for the loot that the escaped prisoner was after, which is hidden in the pond. The children follow the criminals and watch them go out on a boat to the loots location. When the criminals decide they need more equipment they return to the boat shed and dick sabotages the boat.
The Five then take a raft out to try and get to the loot first. The criminals spot them and pursue but soon their boat is taking on water and they start to sink.
