Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Tiimy the Dog are holidaying in 2 old fashioned horse drawn Caravans. They are shocked to find an elephant in a nearby stream and meet Nobby, who is from the circus and taking care of the elephant.
The Famous Five decide to set up the caravans in a nearby field and go to visit Nobby at the circus, although Nobby's uncle Tiger Dan is very unhappy. Later Tiger Dan and his sidekick Lou who suggest the children camp elsewhere.
When Timmy is poisoned it is clear that someone wants the caravans moved.
The Five go out for the day but Julian sneaks back and discovers that there is a secret passage near the camp site that houses stolen property.
The Five save the day along with Nobby and Pongo the chimpanzee .
