Dubai has a mystic aura that attracts people from around the globe, and during my 14 years working in the desert at a dusty racetrack on the edge of the city, a.k.a. Dubai Autodrome, I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing many intriguing characters.

The late great Maradona arrived at our indoor karting facility in 2014 to film an Argentinian television episode that, as best as I could understand, involved something about the football icon go-kart racing against a group of teenagers.

With one fist held up high crossing the finish line it certainly appeared that Maradona was the victor, but the most entertaining part of the filming was watching the soccer star speak to the kids after the karting was finished. He was larger-than-life, a speedy superhero, constantly in motion and entertaining the gathering of wide-eyed kids and camera-clicking journalists.

The super showman was gone, replaced by a tired, insightful human being. Maradona still symbolizes many different things to many different people. On that day he visited, we caught a glimpse of both man and myth.

A full decade separated visits by F1 driver Nico Rosberg, with a world championship title in between, so it was interesting to see how the narrative of his life, and how the racer himself, had changed over time.

When Nico made his first visit to the track in 2009, he was a young talent driving for Williams. Expectations were high, but he was still more famous for being son of Keke Rosberg (1982 Formula One World Champion) than for winning races.

On behalf of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), Rosberg was travelling with F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart. I snapped this photo of the two them, just before Rosberg took over driving duties in the AUH Motorsports Radical pictured on the left:

Exactly ten years later Nico Rosberg returned to the track, but this time without Sir Jackie Stewart. Much had changed since his first visit. Rosberg had moved to Mercedes to pair up with another Sir, his childhood rival and (now) seven-time world champion, Lewis Hamilton. With great effort, Rosberg finally got the better of Hamilton in 2016 and immediately retired following the monumental feat.

Since then, Rosberg has plied his trade as a race pundit and a popular influencer on social media. When he visited in 2019, he was pitting the exotic McLaren Senna versus McLaren 720S on track for his vlog. 152ee80cbc
