 Christmas in My Family.

Hello! My name is Alexander. I live in Ukraine. My family is large. I live with my parents and grandparents. I've got two elder sisters Olga and Anna. Now they are students of Kyiv University and they visit our place only on holidays and some family occasions. Each Ukrainian family has its own customs and traditions. Ours is not an exception. My parents are very sociable and friendly people, so from time to time our house is full of guests. Our favourite holidays are New Year, Christmas and Women's Day. My mother thinks that at night of New Year's Eve the old year with all its troubles leaves us forever and the New Year with all our hopes and expectations knocks at our doors. On the eve of January the 7' we start celebrating Christmas. It's a real ritual for ray grandparents. My granny always gets ready for this religious holiday beforehand. On Sviat Vechir we gather around the table for a holy supper of twelve symbolic dishes. We are not allowed to start supper until the first star appears in the sky. We begin our supper with the kutia (a dish of honey, poppy seeds and wheat kernels boiled in pure rainwater). There are no meat and meat products on our table. My granny is a wonderful cook, so we enjoy her varenyky, holubtsi and desserts made from dried fruit and honey. After tasty supper we go to bed. Early in the morning we go to church to take part in the church service. When we come back home we give each other presents and wish "Merry Christmas'". All boxes with the presents are located under Christmas tree. It's a nice time when my sisters are at home and we've got a lot of happy moments together.

Different Professions and Roles

My name is Karen and I'm a writer. I love my job because I enjoy telling stories. I write books for children and teenagers, and I also write for a magazine. I usually work at home, but sometimes I go to a café or a park to write.

I get up early in the morning because I work best in the morning. I have breakfast and then I go for a walk with my dog, Toby. After that, I start working. I sit at my desk and I write for about three hours. Then I stop and I have lunch. In the afternoon, I usually do some more writing, but sometimes I go out and meet my friends. They are also writers, so we talk about our work. I finish work at about 6 o'clock. In the evening, I watch TV or read a book.

My name is Carlos and I'm a chef. I work in a restaurant in the city centre. We have a lot of customers, so it's very busy. I like my job, but it's hard work. I work from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., so I don't have a lot of free time. I usually only have one day o a week. On my day o , I relax at home or I go out with my friends.

In the mornings, I make breakfast for my family. Then I go to work. I usually take the bus because it's quicker than driving. At the restaurant, I check the food and I talk to the other chefs. Then I start cooking. I cook all day, but I usually have a short break in the afternoon. In the evenings, I'm very busy because there are a lot of customers. At about 11 p.m., I finish work and I go home. I'm very tired, so I go straight to bed.

On Saturdays, I usually get up late, but on Sundays I get up early because I help my mother at the market. She sells fruit and vegetables, so I carry the bags and I talk to the customers. In the afternoons, I sometimes watch a football match with my friends, but sometimes I just relax at home.

One winter evening a poor peasant sat near the fire talking with his wife about one of their neighbours who was a rich man."If only I had a little money myself", he said, "I should open my own shop"."I", answered his wife, "should not be satisfied with that, I should be happy if I lived in a big house, and then, if I saw people like ourselves, I should help them and try to make everybody happy. But we are no longer in the time of fairies. If only I could meet one of them, it would not take me long to decide what to ask of her".

Hardly had she said these words when a beautiful young lady appeared in their room and told them she was a fairy willing to grant their first three wishes. But she said they should choose carefully as she could allow them no more than three wishes. Then the beautiful lady disappeared.

At first the husband and wife were astonished. Then they began discussing the first wish that it would be best to have. They quarreled for a long time and finally decided to wish for nothing for a while and put it off till the next day.

     The woman looked at the bright fire and said without thinking: "Oh, it would be a good thing to have a good sausage for our supper". And a long thick sausage fell on their table. The husband got very angry and began scolding his wife. "Isn't that a fine wish? You're such a stupid woman! I wish this sausage would stick to your nose!" This was hardly said when the sausage jumped up and stuck to the poor woman's face.

     The husband understood that he himself had been even more foolish than his wife, but no matter how he tried he could not tear the sausage off his wife's nose. "If you had not wished to have this beauty sausage, I should not have wished it to stick to your nose", said the husband.

Finally they realized that they had only one wish  left. They thought for a long time and agreed to have their last wish. They wished the sausage to fall on the table, which it did.
