Every day, he goes running in his neighborhood for 40 minutes. He can also swim very well. He swims for his state's over 50 team! Thomas can't speak any foreign languages, but his wife, Judy, certainly can! She can speak French, Spanish, and even Japanese. And she can teach them too. She works at the Pinewood Language Academy. Thomas and Judy Hodgson have three children and they can all do many things too. Robbie, 23, can't run for long distances like his father, but he can run very fast. He can run 100 meters in just 11 seconds. That's very fast. He can also fly! Not like a bird, but using a hang-glider. He goes hang-gliding every weekend in the hills near the family home. The middle child is Janine, who is 19. She's similar to her mother and she loves foreign languages. She studies Italian and French and can speak both of them very well. When she's with her mother, they can speak French and nobody in the house understands them! Clara is the baby of the family. She's only 9 years old. She can't speak French and she can't fly. What can she do? She can bake the best cakes in the world! And her parents and her brother and sister can eat them.

Most people believe that in Britain it rains all the time, but this is not true. It rains just as much in many other European countries as it does in Britain. In fact, Hamburg in Germany gets more rain than London. November and December are the wettest months, but the British weather is difficult to predict.
Summer is usually warm and sunny, but sometimes it rains during the summer. In autumn, it is often quite windy and the leaves fall from the trees. In winter, it often snows too, but it doesn’t usually last very long. The sky is grey and cloudy most of the time. Spring isn’t very warm and it rains a lot.
Britain is warmer than other northern countries because of the warm air that comes from the Atlantic. But you never know what weather to expect in Britain – you always need to carry an umbrella with you, just in case it rains.

Time for an adventure?

Our cultural journeys will help you discover ancient civilisations: India, Thailand, Egypt and many more. Visit temples, palaces and ancient ruins – just remember to bring your camera! Get to know local ways of life by exploring markets, trying exotic foods and meeting local people.
Trekking tours
We have trekking holidays to famous places such as Machu Picchu or the Everest Base Camp Trek, as well as some nearer to home in the Highlands of Scotland. You don’t need to be very sporty, just fairly fit. You’ll have a great time enjoying nature with a group of new friends. Some of the holidays include camping, but we’ll transport the tents for you!
Wildlife holidays
We organise small-group tours to get closer to nature in Africa, Asia or South America. Go on safari in Africa and watch lions and giraffes. Meet the famous turtles of the Galapagos Islands. Look for tigers in India, or take an elephant safari in Sri Lanka. We use local guides and stay in a range of accommodation, from tents to tree houses.

Like any other country Britain has its manners and customs as well as reputation. Foreigners often say that in English trains people never speak to each other. But it of course is not true.
Not long ago I was travelling to London. In my compartment there were many pas-
sengers and they talked to each other most all the time. They told each other where they lived, where they were going and, of course, were talking about the weather. As soon as the train started, a little girl sitting by the window, called out: «We're off!» I found out that she was going to her aunt's in Cheswick. «It's somewhere near the Thames, but I don't know exactly where», the girl said. «Shall we be passing anywhere near it?» «Cheswick? It's easy to find. You can get to it on the Tube. I'll show you where to go when we arrive», I told her. «Goodness! How fast the train is going!» said an old lady. «Do they go so fast in snowy weather and at night?» Her neighbour smiled, took out a book and began to read. Here was a typical Englishman: during the whole journey he didn't say a single word. But as we arrived in London, he got up and turning to the lady said with the strong accent: «Excuse me, I do not understand English. I'm from Poland».

At home I like to practice the drums, but my mother says that it is too loud. Sometimes I play so loudly that I break a drumstick. I practice whenever she goes out. I would like to be in a rock band. Some of my friends and I are thinking of starting our own rock band. My sister is a very good piano player. She has won many awards at music festivals. Guitar
The guitar is a musical instrument with ancient roots that is used in a wide variety of musical styles. Schools in Britain
Ted and Mark go to a typical British school. When they were eleven, they left their primary school and went to the secondary school. Now they are thirteen and they are in year 8.
British schoolchildren study the same subjects and have the same lessons until they are thirteen. At thirteen they choose the su bjects they want to do for the national GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams. They take these exams in year 11 (at the age of sixteen). British children should take national exams in six subjects, although they might take more. Then they might stay at school for two more years and study for two or more A-level1 exams. But they might leave school after their GCSEs. Ted and Mark are doing eight subjects. They have to study English and Maths, and they have chosen French, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Art and Design, and Information Technology2 . Their classmates chose different subjects so they don’t have many lessons together even though they are still in the same form. They’re taking their GCSE exams in June. They also do PE but there isn’t a PE exam.
Ted and Mark go to school from Monday to Friday. School starts at 9 o’clock. There is a 20-minute break at half past 10. They have lunch at one o’clock. A few people go home but most of them eat lunch in the canteen.
Afternoon lessons start at quarter to 2 and finish at quarter to 4. After school the boys do sport. In their school pupils can also join the music group or belong to a club. When they get home, they have to do their homework.
They like their school but Ted hates the uniform they have to wear. After school the boys would like to go to a university but none of them has decided what they want to study yet.
