 ”Travelling”.

     Travelling is very popular nowadays. The best way to get to know and understand people is to meet them in their own homes. You can travel by plane, by train, by ship, by car or by bus. The fastest and the most comfortable way of travelling is by plane. But it is most boring way of travelling. When you get on the plane, the air hostess has to point to your seats. You can have an enjoyable time in comfortable armchairs. It is very expensive to travel by plane.

     Travelling by train is slower than by plane, but it has its advantages: you can see the country, there are sleepers and dining-cars in trains which make your journey enjoyable.

     The best way to learn more interesting things is to travel by bus. While travelling by bus you can see many places of interest, buildings, nature through the window.

     Travelling by car also has its advantages: you can stop wherever you wish, you can make your own time-table. Travelling by car is popular for pleasure trips while people usually take a train or a plane when they are on business.

     Some people like to travel by ship and enjoy a sea voyage. It is the best way to enjoy natural scenes.

THE MAGIC BASKET 

A mother and her little son live in a little house. They are very poor. All they have is a grey goat. One day the mother says, “We have no money, we have no bread. You must go and sell the goat.” The boy takes the goat and goes to the town. He meets a farmer with a large basket in his hands. “Sell me your goat”, says the farmer. “What can you give me for it?” asks the boy. “I can give you this basket”, says the farmer. “What good is this basket for me?” says the boy. “What can I put in it? I have no bread, I have no eggs, I have no apples!”  “My little girl is ill”, says the farmer. “She must drink some milk from a grey goat every day or she will die”. The boy is kind. He is sorry for the little girl. He gives his goat to the farmer, takes the basket and goes home. When he comes home, he puts the basket on the table and shows it to his mother. The mother looks at the basket and says, “What good is this basket for us, what can we put in it?” But suddenly the basket says, “I am a magic basket.” The basket jumps from the table and runs out of the house. When it comes back to the poor boy’s house, it is full of good things. Now the mother and her boy have dinner. Every morning the wonderful basket jumps from the table and runs out of the house. And every day it comes back full of good things. Now the mother and her boy have their breakfast, dinner and supper every day.

The British Airways London Eye, sometimes called the Millennium Wheel, is the first-built and largest observation wheel in the world since the end of 1999. It is 135 meters high. The wheel has 32 closed and air conditioned passenger capsules. It moves at about 0.9 kilometers high so that one round take about 30 minutes. The wheel does not usually stop to take on passengers; the movement is so slow that passengers can easily walk on and off moving capsules. But it is stopped to give disabled or elderly passengers time to get off safely. Since it opening, the Eye has become one of the main tourist attractions.

The sailor and the monkeys

A ship stopped at the coast of South Africa. One of the sailors left the ship and went to a town near the coast. He had some blue caps made of wool in a bag and wanted to sell them in the town. The sun was hot and the sailor decided to have a rest in the forest. He sat down under a big tree, took one of the caps out of his bag and put it on his head. He slept for some time.

When the man woke up, he took his cap off and wanted to put it into his bag with the other caps. But he saw that there were no caps in it now. Where were they?

“Where are my caps?” he cried.

Then the sailor heard a great noise in the trees above his head. He looked up and saw monkeys, and each monkey had a blue cap on its head!

“Give me back my caps, you monkeys!” he cried. But the monkeys didn’t listen to him. They only jumped from tree to tree and made a great noise.

“Give me back my caps!” he cried again and again . But nothing helped. The monkeys only looked at him.

Then the sailor was very angry. He took off the blue cap, threw it on the ground and cried, “You have taken all my caps! You can have this cap too!”

The monkeys saw him do that. Then each monkey took off the cap and threw it on the ground. The sailor picked up his caps, put them into his bag and went to town.

WHY DON’T BRITISH SCHOOLCHILDREN WANT TO EAT FRUIT AND VEGETABLES?

There are many problems that British schools are facing today. One of them is making sure that schoolchildren eat healthy food.

Gone are the days when children were thrilled with excitement at the thought of Christmas treats like oranges and tangerines or simple desserts like rice pudding. Nowadays any fruit and vegetables under the sun can be bought in supermarkets all the year round. There is only one problem with that — fruit and vegetables that are bought out of season have very little taste. On the contrary, sugar drinks like Coke and numerous varieties of flavoured crisps are full of flavour — and chemicals additives! Also, most British mums of today work full time and the last thing they want to do when they get home is cook. Supermarkets are here to “help” — pre-package and ready-made meals have filled their shelves.

As a result, many schoolchildren would rather go hungry than eat fruit or vegetables instead of the more familiar crisps, burgers and chips.

There’s nothing wrong with having a can of Coke every now and then but four cans a day is asking for trouble. Did you know that a can of Coke contains about eight teaspoons of sugar and artificial sweeteners? As a result, many modern kids suffer from such illnesses as diabetes, cancer and tooth decay. And, of course, there are more and more children who are extremely overweight.

In Britain, children can either choose to bring their own lunch or buy their lunch at school. Children from poorer families can have free school dinners but many of them don’t take them for various reasons.
