Reading

 

This happened in Australia, during a water-polo game that was one of the main sports events of the season. There was nothing ex­citing at the beginning of the game; but suddenly one of the players jumped out of the water and ran to the referee. He said that one of the forwards of the other team had bitten him in the leg while he was swimming under the water.

At first the referee thought that it was some kind of a joke, but when the player pointed to blood on his leg, he had to believe that it was serious. He called the forward and asked him why he had done such a strange thing; and though the forward insisted that he had not bitten anybody, the referee made him leave the game.

They began again, but a few minutes later, two players, one from each team, climbed out of the water, shouting that somebody had bitten them. There was blood on both players' legs. The game was stopped, and they began to let the water out of the pool. When almost all the water was let out, everybody saw a young crocodile at the bottom of the pool. Somebody had put the crocodile into the pool, but why? The truth became known when the players returned to their dressing room after the game and found a letter there.

"I have been a water-polo fan for many years", the author of the letter wrote, "and I am not satisfied with the way the players seem to act. They have allowed the game to become slow and uninteresting, and I have decided that I must do something to make them move faster. I don't think I can do this well myself, and I have decided that my crocodile will do it better".

Text I. Cambridge University at a Glance

In 1209, several hundred students and scholars moved some 60 miles from Oxford. Due to some troubles with life and studies, they had to get away from Oxford and settle down in a small place where they established a new university. There were no colleges at those days and student life was absolutely different from what it is now. Students were of all ages and came from everywhere. They made a community, but not all was quiet and peaceful in their lives. Gradually the idea of the College developed and in 1284 Peterhouse, the oldest college in Cambridge, was founded.

Life in College was strict; students were forbidden to play games, to sing merry songs, to hunt or fish, and to dance. Books were rare and all the lessons were in Latin which students were supposed to speak even among themselves. In 1440, King Henry VI founded King's College, and then other colleges followed. Many great personalities studied at Cambridge, among them Erasmus, Bacon, Milton, Cromwell, Newton, Wordsworth, Byron and Tennyson. With the course of time, Cambridge and its colleges gained worldwide popularity and became Oxford's rival in terms of education, research, development and sports. Both Oxford and Cambridge became a standard for any educational establishment that has been created since then throughout the world.

Text II Spanish Omelette

The traditional Spanish omelette is a full dish itself. Each Spanish family produces its own individual version of it according to the season and the availability of vegetables. The following recipe is the most familiar.

- 450 g potatoes, peeled, washed and finely sliced

- salt - 150 ml vegetable oil

- 1 large onion, peeled and finely chopped

- 6 eggs - 4 - 5 tablespoons olive oil

Sprinkle the potatoes with the salt. In a large frying pan heat the vegetable oil. Add the potatoes and onions and fry them over a medium heat for 15 minutes, turning them until they are properly cooked. Remove from the pan with a spatula and drain off most of the excess oil. Stir the eggs in a bowl with a little salt, add the potato mixture and mix well. Heat olive oil in a smaller pan and pour in the egg mixture. While cooking, shape the omelette into a round, pressing the edges away from the sides of the frying pan. Serve with a green salad.

Mrs Bold: Porter is my cocker spaniel and Sanders is my personal assistant. We discuss the recent business events and our plans for the nearest future.

Frank: And what time do you have lunch?

Mrs Bold: At 13 - 13.30, not earlier. I just can't make it earlier with my schedule. And I eat alone - like to be in solitude at least for a while. And no business matters during my lunchtime!

Frank: What is the second half of your day filled with?

Mrs Bold: Well, usually I am doing my tour around the company and watch my people working. Sometimes talk to them. Then have several business conversations with the dealers, branch offices, and even our rival companies.
