BASILICA CATHEDRAL OF ST TRYPHON

KOTOR

MONTENEGRO

The beautiful medieval fortified town of Kotor, situated at the end of the deepest "fjord" in the mediterranean, is protected not only by its strong walls and natural combination of the mountains with the sea, but also by its patron Saint Tryphon, to whom the cathedral and basilica was consecrated way back in 1166.

"In reflecting on the past centuries when the Gospel message of salvation reached the regions of Montenegro, one can see that by embracing both the Eastern and Western traditions, this country has always distinguished itself as a privileged place for that ecumenical encounter longed for by all..

- Pope Benedict XVI

I visited it during a short visit to Montenegro, it was a hot noon, although it was already October. The beaches and mountains were already empty but Kotor was full of people. The romanesque basilica reminded me of some churches of Rome, I also visited a small diocesan museum and admired the city center from the balcony spread in between two massive towers.
