The basilica was built in 1850s in neo-Renaissance style and dedicated to St Dionysius the Areopagite, the disciple of St Paul and the first bishop of Athens.
"Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.”
- Acts 17, 34
During my studies in Thessaloniki, I visited Athens several times and went for the mass here. The cathedral basilica of St Dionysius was the centre of the local Catholic life and also an important gathering place for the local Philippino community.
