BASILICA OF ST ULRICH AND AFRA
AUGSBURG
GERMANY
Roman tomb of St Afra, martyr from 304/5, lies here. She was originally devoted to goddess Venus but converted to Christianity and became a martyr during Diocletian's persecution.
"The sins which I have committed before I knew the true God are sufficient; therefore I cannot do what you command me. I never will do so: it would be adding a new insult to my God.”
- St Afra
The basilica was visited by two popes and turbulent history. I stopped here once during a brief visit to Augsburg and then again with my family and nephew. Augsburg to me is a long road from a dome to a basilica filled with beautiful historical buildings, churches, museums and life in the streets.
