The neo-romantic basilica was built only in 1904-1906 according to the plans of the chief architect of the diocese of Münster, Wilhelm-Sunder Plaßmann. The statue of Our Lady, the Comfortress of the Afflicted, comes from the 12th century.
"Join us in praying that all those who are afflicted may find welcome and comfort in our communities.”
- Pope Francis
Busy early afternoon in the midsized city of Werl, the small square in front of the church was full of people. Some of them were just leaving the church, maybe a noon mess has just ended. I wouldn't guess this is a 20th century church. Pilgrimage places should perhaps stay rooted in the center of the modern everyday life, while set with one leg aside in the silence.
