BASILICA OF ST VIKTOR
XANTEN
GERMANY
Although it was never seat of a bishop, it is called the biggest cathedral between Cologne and the sea. And although Xanten is the birthplace of St Norbert, the cathedral is dedicated to St Victor of Xanten, prefect of the Theban Legion who was a martyr executed for not being willing to sacrifice to Roman gods.
"Norbert then returned to the church at Xanten. Taking his turn celebrating the sacred mysteries of the Mass, he preached a word of exhortation to the people who were present.”
- Life of St Norbert
Early morning in a sleeping city, the morning trade was preparing its stalls in front of the cathedral that was just opening for the early mass.
