The Basilica of Saints Theodore and Alexander in Ottobeuren is a stunning Baroque and Rococo Benedictine abbey church, founded in 764 and appointed a sovereign Imperial Abbey. Key features include its impressive facade with two Bavarian towers topped by bell-shaped cupolas, a breathtakingly decorated interior with three domes and half-domes.
"St Gregory shows us how St Benedict's life was steeped in an atmosphere of prayer, the foundation of his existence. Without prayer there is no experience of God. Yet Benedict's spirituality was not an interiority removed from reality. In the anxiety and confusion of his day, he lived under God's gaze and in this very way never lost sight of the duties of daily life and of man with his practical needs."
- Benedict XVI
I arrived very late after a long day and thought the church would be closed. I was happy to find it not only open but dimly lit still in a Christmas atmosphere.
