BASILICA OF ALL SAINTS
ČESKÁ LÍPA
CZECH REPUBLIC
Albrecht von Wallenstein founded this place as his prestigious project and called the Augustinian monks to take care of education and re-catholization of the region after the Thirty Years' War. The baroque abbey church was built between 1690-1707 and raised to basilica minor in 1927.
“if any man uses this life with a reference to that other which he ardently loves and confidently hopes for, he may well be called even now blessed, though not in reality so much as in hope.”
- St Augustine of Hippo on Saints
We stopped here on our way to the Bohemian Switzerland national park . Three out of the first four Czech minor basilicas are here, in the originally partly German regions, religious and lively 100 years ago, atheistic and a bit desolated nowadays. Actually, Česká Lípa is a living parish, but the former monastery is a museum and the church was closed when we stopped by.
