The basilica is located on the Liebfrauenberg hill in the Alpine valley of the Austrian Vorarlberg region . The richly decorated gothic church had its beginnings around 700 as a fortress church.
"Mary is a woman of hope: only because she believes in God's promises and awaits the salvation of Israel, can the angel visit her and call her to the decisive service of his promises.”
- Pope Benedict XVI
I was fascinated by the Alps. Some mountains were Austrian, some Swiss, some located in Lichtenstein. The valley was deep but the basilica was sitting on the top of a hill, relatively smaller than the giants around, yet very prominent. Our Lady in the center of it was crowned by the surrounding crown of mountains.
