I redesigned my desktop setup as the shelves were sitting directly on the desk and took too much space. So I created a frame composed of timber painted in red (to match other Chinese style furniture in the room) and lateral acrylic panels (decorated with lasercut NZ ferns) to stiffen the whole assembly which is screwed directly in the timber of the desk. The red acrylic panel on top is hiding electrical connections and computer wires. I gained lots of space and achieved amazing ergonomic comfort.
Everything started on screen and I used OnShape CAD to design the whole thing.
The shelves and vertical supports are cut out of standard pine boards and painted with three layers of red decking paint.
The lateral panels are in transparent 6mm acrylic. The shape, fern decoration and assembly holes are lasercut...
... and same technique for the back panel.
No I am not working for Apple, I am just a fan :)
The lateral panels are assembled first and screwed on the top shelf, to make it easier to adjust the position of the lower shelf and the vertical supports.
And the back panel is assembled at the end to secure the rigidity of the whole assembly.
The assembly is resting on the top of the desk and maintain in position with screws on the sides and at the back.
The original shelves just sit on top and centred laterally and stopped at the back by extra height of the transparent acrylic panels.
And finally all the equipment can be connected.
All the power stuff and cables are located at the top...
... and hidden by an acrylic panel.
The "kiwi" hole in the middle actually helps to remove the panel easily with the fingers.
And the kiwi ended up on the fridge !
And there it is...
Very proud of my fern. The 6mm acrylic thickness give a very nice 3D render...
... and adding indirect LED lighting creates a very nice working environment :)
Happy !
