I never found it convenient that my desk chair was uneasy to move around, mainly when you are sitting on it..., and the scrapping feeling on the floor is a bit unpleasant. So I decided to add casters to it.
The challenge was to make the design cosmetically acceptable, and mostly strong enough to carry at least 100kg (not my real weight by the way, just in case...:).
Therefore I chose to design a whole platform and attach the chair onto it !
Although it is a simple basic 2D shape, it was first CADed in 3D with OnShape.
The bottom layer is MDF and the top layer is tranparent acrylic. The MDF is for decoration, it can be swapped for another material and / or colour and / or logo-decoration (see last picture at the bottom of the page). The acrylic is for tension strength and high tech finish. Both layers were lasercut.
The 6mm acrylic layer is attached first with 4 screws on the chair's feet.
And then the MDF is held in position below the acrylic with the 4 casters.
Sonny is always there for usual final inspection...
And this is what it looks like after removing the paper protection of the acrylic layer
(I am not employed by Apple, I am just a fan...:)
Later I decided to change the brown MDF background as I wanted a more modern look so I replace it with a transparent acrylic background and a black acrylic apple !
