For me it's always just been to look beneath a shroom's cap to see what type of texture it had underneath. The spongy ones are the edible ones (a vast majority of times) and little crevasses always meant they're toxic/not tasty - Red

Very specific to Wales/UK/Britian but should work elsewhere; any open fields after a long spout of rain will have many mushrooms! The best ways to identify them for me are texture and general shape; the easiest safe mushrooms to identify are super spongy and usually very rounded (take the giant puffball). Cutting into them for colour is also a good way to tell if the spores are good to eat! - Percy
