The Murray State University Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) recently held a resume-building workshop featuring guest speaker Tara Siress from Murray State’s Career Services. Tara shared valuable insights on how to craft a professional and effective resume that meets today’s hiring standards and stands out in a competitive job market.
During her presentation, Tara explained how many companies now use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to scan resumes before they ever reach a human recruiter. These scanners can only read certain formats, meaning that a poorly formatted resume could prevent an applicant from being considered for an interview. She guided members through what these systems look for—including keyword use, structure, and formatting—and how to ensure a resume passes the initial digital screening.
Following Tara’s presentation, PRSSA’s professional advisor offered her perspective as an employer in the public relations field. She emphasized the value of creativity in PR and encouraged students to design visually appealing resumes when submitting printed copies to potential employers. In a creative profession like public relations, she noted, employers want to see originality—not cookie-cutter templates.
The session provided students with essential, real-world knowledge to help them navigate the job application process with confidence. For many seniors preparing to graduate, this advice came at the perfect time.
