How does this course work?

This is an upper division political science course, that has an experiential learning component. We will learn about American politics and apply what we learn in a campaign to register Weber State students to vote. We are competing with every campus in Utah in this campaign and we want to win. As a result, you will learn durable skills that you can write about on your resume and talk about in your interviews.

We are reading both a textbook and and current articles to understand how American politics works. We are participating in weekly conversations that asks you to ask a curious question about material we are covering and answering other students' questions as well. Given these weekly assignments, you should always assume you have something to do for this class. If you go a few days without checking in, you are probably missing something.

Over the course of the semester, we will cover 2 content units. The summative assignment for each unit is an exam, which will demonstrate your understanding of everything you have learned. The summative assignment for the class is Weber State Votes, the name of our voter registration campaign, and it will include pieces that we will do as appropriate given content we are covering.

Teaching Philosophy

My approach to teaching upper division courses in the political science major is that I assume you are as into this very cool political show as I am. I think that some of you have been watching the show since the pilot episode, like me, and some of you joined in season 3 or 4. Just know that I am the kind of friend who is so excited to talk to you about my favorite show - I will be super excited and hope you catch the vibe.

For all of my courses, my goal is that you want to become an active and engaged citizen of the place you call home. My goal is that you become a good neighbor. If you are an active and engaged citizen and a good neighbor, you will be an asset to our republic, and I intend to give you all the skills you need to be these.
