Three years ago, a bloodthirsty race of interdimensional beings known as the Disas appeared and destroyed everything they could reach on Earth. With regular weapons rendered useless, humanity's only hope of survival relied on humans who became magical girls after forming an alliance with the Spirit Realm, who had followed the Disas to Earth. After a violent conflict, the squad of magical girls emerge victorious, with the survivors now known as the "Magical Five."

Following the war with the Disas, the Magical Five disbands. Kurumi Mugen, Mia Cyrus, Tamara Volkova, and Lau Peipei independently continue their own military services, while their leader, Asuka Ootorii, retires and becomes a high school student. However, Asuka's peace is short-lived, as it seems there were survivors on the enemy's side as well. As magic must be fought with magic, Asuka is dragged back into combat as an even worse battle looms on the horizon.

Ki is the natural energy that flows through all living things. However, if the person is skilled enough, then the person can actually utilize Ki for offensive and defensive abilities. If a person is skilled enough to master ki, then the person can predict the opponent's moves or analyze their fighting style. Only 4 individuals have been shown to use ki Sara, Kariya Kagetoki, Shoryu and Mugen.

Salty Bet is a game about a game. It pits computer-controlled fighting game fighters against other computer-controlled fighting game fighters on a nearly non-stop loop. As is tradition with beat 'em ups, the fighters come from all corners of the earth. There's Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, Mai Shiranui from King of Fighters, and Spiderman from Marvel vs. Capcom 2. But there's also the aforementioned baby in a mech suit. There's a killer whale. There's a man-sized version of the open-gobbed subject from Edvard Munch's expressionist painting the Scream, appropriately named 'Munch.'.

They're able to fight each other thanks to the magic of MUGEN: a free fighting game engine that allows people to plug in their favourite characters. Ken and Ryu have had their data and move-set cribbed straight from Street Fighter. Munch is a community-made character born from 2chan's desire to replicate Japanese memes in a fighting game environment. In between are all manner of oddities: existing fighting game characters with vastly increased damage, bafflingly powerful schoolgirls, and - for some reason - a small army of Dragon Ball Z characters, each with a varying suffix.

Darkstalkers felt like one of those fighting games that I missed out on as a kid. Unfortunately, by the time I was fully aware of the series, the PS2 generation was in full swing, and I couldn't find copies of the PSX releases. It also didn't help that Darkstalkers had a hit-and-miss console run in the West.
