무각사는 도심 속 수행 사찰이자 시민에게 열린 문화의 장으로, 전남광주와 더불어 호남 불교를 이끄는 대표적 공간이다. 1971년 송광사 구산 스님과 지역 불자들이 뜻을 모아 창건한 사찰로, 당시 이곳에 있던 상무대 장병들의 호국정신과 불교 신행의 정신적 귀의처 역할을 했다. 1994년 상무대가 장성으로 이전한 뒤에는 군부대의 법당에서 시민과 불자에게 열린 도심 사찰로 성격을 넓혔다. 이후 수행과 포교뿐 아니라 전시와 교육, 다양한 문화 행사를 개최하며 시민의 일상 가까이에서 함께 호흡하는 도량으로 자리 잡았다.

무각사가 있는 여의산 일대는 군부대 이전 이후 5·18기념공원으로 조성됐다. 이에 따라 과거 군사시설 안에 있던 사찰은 민주화운동을 기리는 공원과 시민들이 일상적으로 오가는 산책로가 둘러싼 공간이 됐다. 군사도시의 흔적과 5·18의 기억, 종교적 수행과 시민의 휴식이 한 장소에서 교차하며 무각사가 지나온 시간의 변화를 함축한다. 도심 한가운데에 있으면서도 숲과 낮은 구릉에 둘러싸인 환경은 종교와 관계없이 누구나 잠시 머물며 숨을 고를 수 있는 분위기를 만든다.

로터스 아트스페이스는 서구 상무지구의 무각사문화관 1층에 있는 전시 공간으로, 2010년 5월에 문을 열었다. 무각사의 개방적 성격을 시각예술로 확장한 이곳은 강연과 문화 행사, 템플스테이 등 사찰의 다양한 프로그램과도 유기적으로 연결된다. 지역 작가 초대전과 기획전을 꾸준히 개최하는 한편, 신진 작가 공모로 선정된 작가에게 작품 제작과 전시 공간을 지원한다. 이를 통해 젊은 작가들이 자신의 작품을 처음으로 소개하고 교류하는 발표의 장이 되고 있다.

무각사 로터스 아트스페이스는 지역 작가의 전시는 물론, ‘광주비엔날레’와도 지속적으로 관계를 맺고 있다. 무각사는 2012년 ‘제9회 광주비엔날레’의 야외 전시장으로 쓰였고, 로터스갤러리는 2018년 파빌리온 프로젝트, 2020년 5·18민주화운동 40주년 특별전, 2023년 ‘제14회 광주비엔날레’ 전시 공간으로 활용됐다. 이후 내부를 리모델링하고 2026년에는 로터스아트스페이스로 이름을 바꿔 재개장했다. 사찰의 종교적 수행과 정신적 휴식, 지역 작가의 창작 활동과 국제적 현대미술 교류가 한 공간에서 만난다는 점에서 로터스 아트스페이스는 종교 시설의 경계를 넘어선 문화 공간으로 자리매김했다.

Mugaksa is both a place of Buddhist practice in the heart of the city and a cultural space open to the public, serving as a prominent site that leads Honam Buddhism in Jeonnam-Gwangju. Founded in 1971 through the collective will of Master Kusan of Songgwangsa Temple and local Buddhists, it initially served as a place of religious practice and a spiritual refuge for the soldiers stationed at the nearby Sangmudae Combat Arms Training Center. Following the relocation of Sangmudae to Jangseong in 1994, Mugaksa expanded its role from a Buddhist sanctuary within a military base to an urban temple open to all citizens and Buddhists. Since then, it has established itself as a sanctuary by continually hosting exhibitions, educational programs, and cultural events alongside its Buddhist practice and outreach.

The area around Yeouisan Mountain, where Mugaksa is located, was transformed into the May 18 Memorial Park following the relocation of the military complex. As a result, the temple, once situated within a military facility, is now surrounded by a park commemorating the May 18 Democratization Movement and by walking paths regularly used by the public. The traces of the former military city, the memory of May 18, religious practice and civic rest intersect at this site, encapsulating the changes Mugaksa has undergone over time. Although located in the center of the city, the environment surrounded by forests and low hills creates a calm atmosphere where anyone, regardless of religious affiliation, can pause and catch their breath.

Lotus Gallery is an exhibition space located on the ground floor of the Mugaksa Cultural Center in the Sangmu district of Seo-gu, Gwangju, which opened its doors in May 2010. Extending the temple’s inclusive nature into the field of visual art, the gallery is connected to Mugaksa’s various programs, including lectures, cultural events and temple stays. While consistently organizing invitational and special exhibitions for local artists, it also provides exhibition space and production support to emerging artists selected through open calls. Through these efforts, it serves as a platform for artists to introduce their works and engage with others.

Furthermore, Mugaksa’s Lotus Gallery has not limited itself to showcasing local artists but has continuously maintained a collaborative relationship with the Gwangju Biennale. Mugaksa served as an outdoor exhibition venue for the 9th Gwangju Biennale in 2012, while Lotus Gallery was used as a venue for the Pavilion Project in 2018, the special exhibition commemorating the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratization Movement in 2020, and the 14th Gwangju Biennale in 2023. Following the 14th Gwangju Biennale in 2023, the interior underwent renovation, and the space reopened in 2026 under the new name Lotus Art Space. By bringing together Buddhist practice and rest, the creative activities of regional artists and international contemporary art within a single venue, Lotus Gallery has expanded Mugaksa beyond the boundaries of a religious institution into a broader cultural space.
