1995: mara is born on january 2nd, 1995, in maracaibo, venezuela.
late 1997: by two years old, mara wasn't speaking. her parents depend heavily on her uncle, her father's brother, bernardo coloma to babysit ( based in maiquetia ) due to her mother struggling to make peace with her daughter's learning difficulties.
1998: by three, due to bernardo's patience and her determination, mara begins talking. she ends up moving in with bernardo as her mother disowns her for being 'different'. her father visits where he can.
late 1999: bernardo attempts to enter mara into public school. she is bullied for being different to the other children, denied special support and her uncle resorts to home-schooling.
1999 - 2005: mara spends these years happily alongside her uncle. she does struggle with the dysfunctional family dynamic. with bernardo being a former u.s marine, having returned home to recover from a diagnosis of ptsd, she grows up around weapons - learning about them. she also grows up beside the beach, favouring the location and spending much time there. she assists her uncle with his ptsd episodes, learning a lot about the disorder.
2006: having grown up with minimal exposure to other children, mara reacts violently towards another child attempting to share one of her toys at the beach. she knocks out a few of their teeth and leaves a swollen lip behind, cutting her right knuckle. bernardo realises mara might not be coping as well as she appears to be and is worried she's missed out on vital development.
late 2006: mara is taken to see a therapist. they suggest to bernardo she's merely attention seeking.
2007: unbeknownst to her, bernardo is approached by the cia. having developed a tolerance towards and coping mechanisms for his ptsd, he agrees to help them. he is asked to keep tabs on and carry out surveillance on a terrorist group located in maiquetia. he begins teaching mara self defence some months after she turns twelve.
2008 - 2009: mara's development is impressive, capable of speaking both spanish and english, reading and writing, an enjoyer of the outdoors as well as knowing how to handle a variety of weapons and to defend herself, she's a highly intelligent individual. unfortunately, due to bernardo's responsibilities, he becomes less available - this is difficult for mara.
2009: mara is fourteen when bernardo witnesses a break-in at his neighbour's house. mr donso, his neighbour, is shot dead at the scene - bernardo intervenes and takes out one of the invaders but the others get away. it's suggested it's gang-related, that mr donso saw something he wasn't mean to. bernardo suggests they move and becomes overprotective of mara and bossy, setting unusual boundaries and curfews. to defy him, mara routinely sneaks out.
2009 continued: mara overhears bernardo suggest to her father that he should take her, that she wasn't safe with her uncle anymore. feeling betrayed, mara flees the house and goes to the beach - a place of safety. here, she is ambushed and taken hostage. she is bound, gagged and threatened - accused of being a spy, of helping her spy uncle. they call themselves al-qatala. she's held hostage for two days before managing to free herself and escape. the police are alerted and she's reunited with bernardo. ( should be noted that this is a wide-spread group of terrorists operating prior to omar sulaman founding aq. )
2009 continued: days later, she's woken by an audible struggle in her home. upon searching, she finds bernardo deceased with multiple gunshots to the torso. she is ambushed yet again, but overpowers her attackers - killing one of them. the second, she takes hostage, for questioning. she tortures them and learns their location and objective, as well as that her house is rigged to blow if the men don't return. she kills the hostage, buries bernardo, packs a bag and leaves - her home is indeed destroyed.
2009 continued: unaware of their presence across the globe, mara sets out to hunt down the local al-qatala - to avenge her uncle. this leads her into fifteen years old.
2010: almost dying in the process, mara eliminates the small aq cell. she's arrested by local police. whilst being held, a cia operative visits her. her actions had garnered their attention. she is informed her uncle was spying for them. impressed by her, they offer to wipe her soon-to-be criminal record and to free her from inevitable prison time. she's blackmailed into agreeing - not wanting to go to prison. they explain that she only took out a small cell and that there were plenty more looking to harm many more people and suggest she could help. at such a young age, she's adaptable and shapable.
2010 continued: it's relayed to her parents she'd died in the explosion of her home, alongside her uncle. she is officially a ghost. through the cia, she learns about her autism. the alias mara is chosen, from maracucha - meaning native of maracaibo, since that's what caused her rebirth. she begins her training at fifteen years old. she is appointed a carer / guardian known only as 'max' - the two develop a close, family dynamic over the following years.
2010 - 2012: mara spends the following 2 years, post-recruitment, training alongside her first handler, david belov, and then is deployed into locations of interest, providing intel for the u.s to launch in-country covert ops against aq sleeper cells.
2013: omar sulaman, aka the wolf, splits from western forces and founds 'al-qatala.' mara volunteers for u.s special forces training, putting herself through rigorous tests at eighteen. this is where she meets ghost, a british special air service lieutenant whose reasons for being there were confidential. she strikes up a 'friendship' with him, intrigued by him. once training ends, they part ways but not without him giving her some wise words first.
2013 - 2016: with her experience and age comes more responsibility, leading to her overseeing and leading her own clandestine ops for the cia. she's garnered a reputation by this point and is respected as a skilled, impactful asset.
2014: during an undercover op, mara is betrayed by her corrupt handler - david, who reveals she's a mole to the sleeper cell she's managed to get close to due to her overhearing intel regarding a corrupt officer which she relayed to david unaware they were referring to him. mara is interrogated and tortured before getting free, killing the members of the cell and fleeing to her safe house.
2014 - continued: mara witnesses david shooting max upon her arrival at the safe house. a fight ensues with belov, leading to a confrontation after she subdues him. mara kills david and max dies from his wounds, forcing her to go on the run and into hiding - having killed a cia officer. for the next few months, mara remains in hiding until lieutenant ghost tracks her down and brings her back - max had managed to record the confession and the cia wanted her to continue working for them. she takes some time to recover from her injuries and trauma.
2015 - 2017: she continues on like nothing happened. a new handler is appointed to her, under the name 'juliette clement', and after she's recovered she goes back into the field.
end of 2015: during a classified, undercover mission in the middle east, mara discovers 'rafael montes', a crashed us air force pilot who has been taken hostage by al-qatala. she manages to free him, transferring him to american care, and maintains her cover. once the mission is over, she visits him in recovery and learns of his honourable discharge. rafi is then recruited as mara's own personal, private pilot, out of distrust for the cia post-betrayal.
2017: after 7 years of serving the cia as an asset, she is invited to join warcom, a multinational special military formation consisting of operators from around the world - with al-qatala being their primary objective.
late 2017: she leads the assassination of an al-qatala-related high value target in moscow, accompanied by fellow warcom operators including lieutenant ghost. when things go wrong and mara finds herself at risk of being disavowed, ghost steps up to help her safely escape and get back to base. they're forced to hide out for three days before securing a way out.
2018 - early 2020: during this time, mara partakes and / or leads various in-country and out of country operations to manage and eliminate aq presence / growth, sometimes going undercover to conduct reconnaissance and pass on intel to the cia. she also has various missions alongside lieutenant ghost - some being just the two of them. they're a highly effective and successful duo. a blossoming relationship builds for a few years between the two, innocent and unpursued in the beginning until, during one of these missions in 2019, they sleep together. mara and simon have an on and off, unstable relationship over the following couple of years, but it never lasts due to each other's own personal traumas and issues. they remain very good friends.
2020: she's sent to kastovia - verdansk, to secure a biochemical load (gas) that ends up shot out of the sky. enemies defend the gas and a fight ensues. threat to life forces teammates to fight one another and mara barely escapes, losing six of her team. awaiting exfil, she bumps into lieutenant ghost, who is trying to understand what's going on and scout the situation out for further incoming teams.
2020 - 2023: mara remains a clandestine asset, carrying out the necessary missions to keep the cia up to date with al-qatala's latest. she becomes well acquainted with task force 141, a multinational special operations unit, and begins assisting in the covert recon and intel of makarov and konni group.
