Mubi (/mubi/; stylized as MUBI; the Auteurs before 2010) is a global streaming platform, production company and film distributor. MUBI produces[1] and theatrically distributes films by emerging and established filmmakers, which are exclusively available on its platform. The catalog consists of world cinema films, such as arthouse films, documentary films, independent films.[2] Additionally, it publishes Notebook, a film criticism and news publication, and provides weekly cinema tickets to selected new-release films through MUBI GO.

MUBI is also a film distributor. In addition to releasing films on the platform, it started distributing theatrically in the United States and United Kingdom in 2016, and in Latin America and Germany in 2021.

Now, the service has expanded its selection with a permanent library of films. The selection marks MUBI as one of the best places to discover the kind of interesting, esoteric movies that are often bypassed by other, more mainstream streaming services.

Looking to watch something feel-good with teeth? There are few films that will better fit the bill than this 1963 comedy classic from Stanley Donen. Audrey Hepburn stars as Reggie, a woman who is dragged into a spy plot when her husband is murdered. Cary Grant plays Peter, a man who she meets while holidaying in the Alps, who keeps cropping up.

This arresting piece from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino is one of the more interesting short films found on the site. With superb performances from a cast, including Julianne Moore, Mia Goth, KiKi Layne and Kyle MacLachlan, the story follows a New York-based writer who encounters geniuses and oddballs on her journey to retrieve her mother from Italy.

And finally, culture. I use culture in the full sense of the word, connoting cultural products, the appreciation of those products, and also the features that characterize a specific group of people. MUBI is, above all, and perhaps more than any other online platform, dedicated to cultivating this group and their appreciation of these films.

So we see that watching films on an online streaming service like MUBI is largely solitary, individualistic, and un-immersive. However, I think what makes MUBI important for film fans is the extent to which they resist this trend and strive towards a collective experience of film in the Internet age.

The prominence of the user reviews on the film pages on MUBI serves as a proclamation of their conception of the social aspect of filmgoing. Because cinema developed as a public, populist, and collective art form (both in the production and consumption of films) it is impossible to envision cinema apart from its communal aspect. MUBI deftly preserves this spirit throughout the site; you cannot look at a film without experiencing some of what others experienced watching this film. Taking this into account, MUBI is squarely anti-solitary and socially immersive.

The streaming platform Mubi is massively bolstering its film catalog with an expansive new content deal with Sony Pictures that will bring over 50 classic films to the service per Deadline. All the new films will cycle through the service and be available for certain windows of time with some titles already going live on the platform. Containing a mix of arthouse films and mainstream hits, the haul of films will filter onto the platform through 2024.

Mubi has slowly built up a catalog of films in the U.S. that's 900 titles strong with one new film coming to the platform every day. With the Sony deal, it adds serious firepower with the headliners including Stephen Spielberg's extraterrestrial classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Peter Bogdanovich's The Last Picture Show, and Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence. That's only scratching the surface of what Mubi gains with the deal as films by acclaimed directors like Wes Anderson, Pedro Almodvar, and Guillermo Del Toro are all included in the package.

There's a ton of variety to the Mubi deal for film lovers of all kinds, showing off the sheer variety in Sony's catalog. Other highlights include 2046 by Wong Kar-wai, Safe by Todd Haynes, To Sleep With Anger by Charles Burnett, Paprika by Satoshi Kon, The White Ribbon by Michael Haneke, The Rider by Chloe Zhao, Orlando by Sally Potter, Husbands by John Cassavetes, and Synecdoche, New York by Charlie Kaufman. Among the films representing Anderson, Almodvar, and Del Toro are Bottle Rocket, Volver, and The Devil's Backbone respectively.

In the context of how protective most companies are of their properties, the Sony deal is a steal for Mubi. Sony Pictures has yet to create a streamer of its own even though it certainly has a mountain of content to rival that of Paramount or any other company. Instead, the company has been pretty open to sharing, even signing a deal with Netflix in 2021 that would give them the rights to stream some of Sony Pictures' newest films starting in 2022 with titles like Uncharted and Morbius.

Moonlight is just one movie that shows great films, that are moving and visually appealing can exist without riding on the back of being white passing or palatable to a whiter audiences. Besides race, Moonlight represented the idea of sexual orientation and essentially coming of age skillfully. There was enough emphasis around it but apart from that, it was extremely honest.

The point I am trying to bring into the conversation at this point is about the representation of Asian people in stylistic drama films in Hollywood. Although Walt Disney Motion Pictures Studios can boast about having been the first to have an Asian-focused superhero movie with Shang Chi, what A24 has done for the conversation of representation cannot be undone.

I do think it is important to mention that a lot of film houses have a long way to go in terms of body representation on films. As aesthetics are a very prevalent part of the visual aspects of film they all have been perpetuating Western standards of beauty on screen.

MUBI has teamed up with Amazon Prime Video so you can also subscribe to MUBI through your Amazon account. If you sign up through Amazon you will get access to all MUBI films but won't have access to MUBI GO, Notebook, or the MUBI community.

You can also get a MUBI membership through Amazon Prime Video. This is the cheapest option and will cost you 9.99 a month. It will give you access to all MUBI films through the Amazon Prime Video interface but you won't get access to the Notebook and you can't get a MUBI GO membership with Amazon. To add MUBI you Amazon Prime Video you must already be a Prime member.
