Course Description

Students will continue to increase and refine their communication skills by planning, drafting, and completing written compositions on a regular basis. Students are expected to use elements of text to defend their written responses and interpretations. Oral presentations are also expected. Students extensively explore literature through reading selections from multiple genres. Students learn literary forms and terms associated with selected readings. Students will also expand vocabulary through word study and will also continue to perfect grammar skills through review and daily activities.

Reading Materials supplied as an in-class set:

Textbook: Prentice Hall Literature 6th Grade

2. 4 Composition Notebooks

3. Pens/pencils/highlighters

4. 2 boxes of tissue

5. 2 bottles of hand sanitizer

6. Colored Pencils

7. 1 ream of multi-color Astrobright printer paper

Library Policy

Students are expected to check-out a book from the library on scheduled library days and log the book title and author and turn it in. The library log will be collected by the teacher.

Homework

Reading: Students are expected to read, AT HOME, at least 30 minutes per night, independently to their parent.

Homework will be generally given once a week. Students are expected to keep up with homework assignments in their planner.

The assignment is considered late if it is not turned in at the time it is due. Unless stated otherwise, all late work will receive a grade penalty. The table below reflects the maximum percentage of the possible grade the student is to receive in class for late assignments.

One Day Late= 90% Two Days Late= 80% Three Days Late= 70% on the third class day that the assignment isn’t turned in, a zero will be assigned.

It is the student’s responsibility to turn in late work.

50% - Homework and Daily Work

Tardy Policy

Students should be in their assigned seat when the tardy bell rings. A tardy log will be kept in the classroom. Between 1-4 tardies, a student will receive a verbal/written warning. After 4 tardies, the student’s parents will be contacted and it is up to the discretion of the teacher to issue an after-school detention.

Tardiness - Jr. High Level

A student who is more than fifteen minutes late to class is truant for the time missed and will be assigned a level three consequence. A student absent from school or from any class without permission, including required tutorials, will be considered truant and subject to disciplinary action.

1-3 Warning / Documented by teacher

4 – 6 Campus Detention Assigned by the Teacher–Parent Phone call

7 or more – Teacher is to submit an office referral/ISS assigned - Parent Phone Call

Proper Paper Heading

Turned-in assignments are to have the student’s full name, date, and class period. Incomplete paper headings will result in 2 points being deducted from the letter grade. Once the student is identified, no name papers will receive 8 points deducted from the letter grade.

If Absent:

1. Upon returning to class, check with teacher about any missed work.

2. Copy all missed assignments into your planner.
