BSA has been holding Klondike Derbies since 1949. The Klondike Derby is an event where Patrols compete against each other, traveling from station to station, showcasing their Scoutcraft skills and teamwork. It is based on the heritage of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896.
Friday, 21 April
Saturday, 22 April
Sunday, 23 April
The goal of this event is to bring the Klondike Derby back to the Interior and allow Patrols to compete against each other in a fun and active way.
Traditional Klondike Derbies award more points for Scout-made sleds and less points for purchased sleds. Since this is our first year and a test to see how it is received, this will not be a factor in judging.

Lost Lake Camp
Mile 58.5 Richardson Hwy
12660 Lost Lake Road
Loveless Loop around camp has been plowed down to dirt. It is still only a single vehicle wide so camp is ONE WAY! Enter camp and proceed up the hill to Honor Lodge. Pass the ranger station then down the hill to the campsties. Leave the campsite and proceed towards waterfront. Then back up the hill to Honor Lodge for Parking (unless the parking lot at the Y intersection got plowed).
FAQs
What is a Flip Flop Winch?
A bushcraft winch using rope and two logs as leavers. The logs are about 6' long. One end of the rope is tied to an anchor point and the other end is tied to a load. As the leavers are flipped, then flopped, the rope winds around one of the leavers creating the mechanical advantage to move the load. Watch this informational video: Flip Flop Winch Video
How will firecraft be judged?
No matches, no lighters = so only a ferro rod, flint and steel, bow/drill, fire piston, or fire plough type fire starters can be used. More points will be awarded for using a more difficult fire starting tool. But this may increase the length of time it takes you to start the fire and cook your popcorn. This is also why the Patrol needs a Dutch oven or deep skillet. Popcorn and oil will be provided.
How do we earn additional points?
Each station is a city, based on the Klondike Gold Rush, Yukon Quest Race and Iditarod Race. Each station, or city, has a mayor. The mayor is the judge. The mayor has the authority to give, or take away, points at their discretion. You can do things like, build a larger shelter to earn more points. But will it cost you in time? Everything is a gamble during a goldrush.
Can AOLs attend?
We highly encourage all Scoutmasters to reach out to their associated Cub Master and invite the AOLs to this event. This will be a great opportunity for the AOLs to participate in a Scouts BSA event and meet the Troop. AOLs will require two-deep leadership at all times. Due to liability insurance and National BSA policy, only registered Scouts and Scouters 11 years of age or older will be permitted to throw the tomahawks. Webelos WILL NOT BE PERMITTED to throw tomahawks whether registered or not.
